Greek Order of the Phoenix, Commander
jimn replied to giorgos_p's topic in Southern European & Balkan States
Hello I have always liked the Order of the Phoenix. I am interested in the Military Division. So you are saying the Order of the Phoenix( and Order of George 1st )"with swords" are only for war service? Useful information to know. Thanks Jim -

jimn replied to cazack's topic in Commonwealth Realms: Canada, New Zealand & Australia Medals & Militaria
Hello Yes the Roll is a book. I got mine from the publisher (who is the author) at clas.chamberlain@xtra.co.nz That was a few years ago though. The Auckland Museum Cenotaph search site will confirm name numbers and rank and other basic information as well. www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial/online-cenotaph From memory I think Australia Canada and I think South Africa named the UN Korea medal. Kind regards Jim -

Hello again I gave incorrect information. He would not have qualified for the NZGSM Korea 54-57 as the period for this medal starts 27 July 1954. -

Hello Cazack, You prob have this He is listed in "the NZ Korea Roll" by Howard Chamberlain page 437 106125 LSig WILSON Arthur Alan RNZN HMNZS Kaniere Depart NZ 02-March 53 RTNZ 02-March 54. Discharged from RNZN 27 Jan 55. he enlisted in the RNZNVR on 1 Jan 1960 until discharged as a Chief Signalman 26 April 1967.. Medals offered for sale May 1982 for $ 125. He would be entitled to the NZGSM (non warlike) clasp Korea 1954-57 , the NZ Defence Service medal clasps Regular and Territorial ,and the South Korean War Medal. I haven't pinned down the correct naming style for the RNZN for Korea . And many NZ naval medals for Korea were issued unnamed. Is his NZ Operational Service Medal an original? As it wasn't inst until 2002. It might cost a bit but all the missing medals he is entitled too are available in Nz and Australia as replicas. Thanks for sharing ..nice group JIM -

Hello again I was wondering if access to Drebetts and Burke's Peerage (in this period) would provide any information about Eddies awards esp foreign? Just a thought . -

The Imperial version of the Medaille Militaire is certainly a very attractive decoration. I agree he wore the Imperial version. We need clearer pictures I am searching as well. Eddie seems to have had many versions of his medal bar!!! I saw a "short" one .worn as KIng with only British awards. Bath/Star of India/St Michael and St George/Indian Empire/Victorian Order/1887 Jubilee with 1897 clasp/Volunteer Decoration/Imperial Service Order. Court mounted British style. Which is the correct order of wear from 1904. -

If his Medalile Militare is pre 1870 is it for a state visit of his mother to France in 1855 or 1868? I thought later but if it is attributed to him in the Royal Collection then I stand corrected...\ This is a very interesting subject and because it is royalty we must not expect normal regulations will apply. -

Are all these portrait pictures of him as King or are some of him as Prince of Wales? British order of wear is Bath/Star of India/St Michael and St George/Indian Empire/Victorian Order...in a photo of Eddie as King I would expect to see all these orders on his bar. As he is the Sovereign and Fount of all Honour. However if he is Prince of Wales this is not necessarily so. I reckon after the Victorian Order in all these groups pictured he must be wearing his mother's jubilee medal ....it would be strange if it were not. I say this because the Indian Empire would be worn between the St Michael /St George and the Victorian Order and I think I see the Victorian Order worn directly after the St Michael and St George . I am probably wrong as it is difficult to be certain from the pictures . Just my two cents worth -

Yes you are right the ribbon looks very different.....maybe an similar type of medal from a German state? I think the the order of wear on the "Russian" group( if it is the Queen Vic jubillee) is correct as he is wearing his British one before foreign awards. I could never understand the awards of royalty and how they wore the until I realized they are Special and above normal regulations esp before 1914. Eddie's medals and uniforms are fun.. he would have thought so too!! -

Hello Guys I think ( and I can't find the reference atm) that Edward VII and George V (when they were monarchs) wore medal bars with the Sovereign badges of the various British orders of knighthood . That first medal on his (rather cool Russian uniform ) is probably Queen Victoria's Jubilee medal 1887 and on his other groups he (must?) be wearing the 1887 with the 1897 bar all in gold of course. Btw British monarchs never wear their own coronation and jubilee medals . His French MM looks to me the 1870 model.. might be something to do with the Entente Cordiale? I don't know much about breast stars of Imperial Germany but i think the he has the combination star for recipients of the Order of the Garter and the Order of the Black Eagle. ..I think there is something similar for the Order of the Elephant. Interesting photos thanks for sharing. -
This is indeed a curious insignia. I see BOTH "savoy cross" and "crossed swords V E" breast stars on older insignia. And I see the President award modern Knight insignia with the crossed sword /1855 on the obverse but then (on another forum) I see a picture of an "RI" obverse on an Officers insignia and a drawing of the Grand Cross with a "RI" obverse sash badge which is worn with a "swords 1855/1947 "star. I assume an "RI" breast star doesn't exist. Perhaps it is just a personal decision how this prestigious award is worn. All the best Jim

Thanks for that information. I too have seen pictures in Manno"s book on Italian medals of officers wearing both pre and post valour medals. at the same time...it is all very interesting.
-
Oh I see.....that is interesting and explains a lot .It seemed a widespread practise So can I assume the Military Order of Italy official obverse is the swords and not the "R . I" ? Just today I was looking at a dealers site and on a Military Order Of Italy I saw the dates 1855 and 1951....not 1947. What is the significance of this? Thank you for helping me understand this order Jim
-
Thanks for that... I just wanted to be sure...I have seen some Italian officers wearing it with the Savoy cross on the obverse.. I think the swords?1855 side looks better. Kind regards Jim
-
Hello Everybody I have a question about the Military Order of Savoy the 1855 model. My references are contradictory about which is the obverse and which is the reverse. I have seen both the Savoy Cross and the crossed swords /date 1855 worn as the obverse and reverse. Totally confused Grazie Jim

Hi Chris Thanks for showing the Operation Daguet badge..always wondered what this badge looked like when I was collecting Desert Storm medals and could never find out. I really like the mini (lapel?) badge..is that numbered too? Are OPEX badges worn with or instead of normal unit badges? I don't know much about French insignia. Thanks Jim -
Hello I have misplaced my notes I took listening in to Rick Lundstrom and you other experts about when the award of the Wehrmacht Long Service awards ceased in WW2. From memory it was outbreak of war in 1939 and awards made in 1940 were the 1939 applications being approved....and something about an odd award in 1941. Is that correct? Thanks Jim
