Just a little addition because I find it interesting: Strich-Division means stripe-division. In the summer of 1917 the men of the ID 208 were ordered not to wear any numbers on their epaulets /dont wear epaulets at all (compare the photo above) - the reason was secrecy. Instead they wore from June 1917 - as The Prussian already wrote above - on the lower part of the left sleeve of the tunic a horizontal stripe made from white cloth and above it different geometric symbols. IR 25 had a vertical stripe, IR 185 a slanting cross, RIR 65 a standing cross, FAR 267 a triangle, the foot artillery a square. The staff only wore the horizontal stripe. Hey, thanks for your answers and these very interesting image-additions! I had some contact with units of the ID 208 - but the name "Strich-Division" was new to me. Do you have any ideas on the helmet in the first picture - could it be wire? I cant take a better shot unfortunately.. Cheers ArHo

Nice! This gives at least a hint who it may be - I would place my bet on Major a. D. Kühne, Artillery, Halle. The medals fit if we consider, from left to right (viewer perspective): EK21813, Kriegsdenkmünze für Kämpfer (version unclear), Dienstauszeichnungskreuz, Erinnerungs-Kriegsdenkmünze 1863 - seems he had his medals arranged a little crude on the occasion of the 50 years celebrations of the latter year. But of course it's all only a guess... ? Cheers ArHo

Good day everyone! We all know that the german army of ww1 sometimes used covers for the steel helmet - but somehow pictures of these are quite hard to find unless you would want to pay a lot of money. You may imagine how happy I was (and still am) am when I recently found in a small group of post cards of a Unteroffizier in a saxon regiment - named and all - a group picture of his company, dated 5-1918, with different types of cover pictured! (at least I hope so but would ask for your expertise) ? I am quite sure that there is a cloth cover on one helmet and - perhaps - the rarely seen "chicken" wire on the other? Looking forward to your feedback! (btw even if you disagree I am really into the expressions on the faces of these very young men - they are on the way into action and they know it...) Best ArHo

I am very sure that's him (The Nose and ear are too similar for any coincidence) - now I will do some research on his wife :-) So first of all here ist one man I was able to identify (I hope...): It should be Oberstleutnant Jakob Hitzler 6. IR, Erlangen (father of Jakob Ritter von Hitzler, t 1915, Militär-Max-Joseph-Orden). I like his set of battle-clasps of which I could until now only decipher "Paris". More to follow... Best

Now here in contrast is a really tricky one which, I am afraid, perhaps cannot be definitely solved at all (or only with another, named picture to compare) - an officer from Amberg with his wife. Unfortunately no name, no medal bar and the numeral / symbol on his Schulterstück is impossible to identify, even with a magnifyer, so I can only assume he also belonged to KB6IR. Any guesses? But anyway - I really love the medals of his wife, awarded for her service as a nurse or the likes in 1870/71 as she has the noncombatants commemorative medal for that conflict. ? Hi all, I recently got some friendly, very efficient help in Identifying a bavarian officer from imperial Germany here: There is a small number of nice CDV-photos in the album where this one came from, that show bavarian army officers I would love to see identified, too. So I thought it would be good to start a thread for these photos and I will add them here when I find the time to take pictures good enough to show. Looking forward to any input on these! And here is the first man... A senior officer, Oberstleutnant? Picture taken in Straubing, I think it is a "5" on the Epauletten. This picture luckily has a name on the back but I cannot decipher it - it is a dedication "to his beloved old friend Elsässer" (who owned this Album), written on 18. May 1901. Cheers ArHo

Wow, Glenn, Prussian: Thank you very much! That really made my day! Though I enjoy researching a bit myself I have some problems with later-empire bavarian officers as in Hannover I cannot access the Militär-Handbücher of the time (and they are not online, yet). This picture comes from an impressive Album - kept as whole - of a bavarian officer who served 1866 and 1870-71 and got some pictures (not too many - ca. 10) from his friends ca. 1890-1900. I am not sure about some of them but if you all enjoy it, I would post the best few of them in the time to come. Perhaps we can ID one or two more...? Hallo everyone! Although I knew this forum for quite some time I somehow never had anything special - or difficult enough to post it here asking for help. Well, now it has happened - I got this nice little picture, taken in Amberg / Bavaria, presumably before 1897 (no Zentenarmedaille). I would guess that, as far I can see by the Epauletten combined with the place, that this is a Hauptmann in the 6th bayarian infantry regiment. But honestly I am not sure about his decorations. I Guess it is, from left to right: - Militärverdienstorden Knights cross (?) - Orden vom Zähringer Löwen Knights cross (?) - Prussia red eagle (???) - Unknown - Bavaria Dienstauszeichnungskreuz 2. Klasse for 24 years Well, before I continue researching this man, any help on his decorations is appreciated! Regards
