Hello Gentlemen, I think only a few of us had direct contacts to the Soviet Forces. Very often the best, rare and unusual items in a collection were obtained through a personal contact. When the border to East Germany was opened it was possible for a short time to get in touch with GSFG.Sometimes it was easy but in some cases it was very dangerous especially when you had a camera with you. Perhaps some people should write about their experiences, and how they got some of their collected items. Unfortunately the most people do not know much about "life under the red star" in GSFG or elsewhere. One day we will forget breathing or forget that a train is faster than we are. A lot of knowledge will be lost for ever. Every human beeing is replaceable. Knowledge is not. I cannot believe that the most people got everything on ebay. there was a time when it was possible to have contacts to the Soviets, to take photographs and to find out how the former enemy lived. We should write about it because that is a part of military history. This forum seems to be the best place for it. If this is the wrong place or the topic is boring, we should forget my suggestion. regards Frank

Trying to save parts of the German and Soviet history causes a lot of problems. Posters are printed on low quality paper with low quality ink. The poster is a short living propaganda. So nobody cared about quality. The paper often contains acid. So it has to be handled very carefully. (using cotton gloves, storage under special conditions like certain humidity and temperature) Originals should never be under glass and in daylight for a long time. A lot of collectors will have problems with their posters after a time if they proudly present them in their living rooms. So a lot of posters and documents which have been saved will be destroyed in the future. The collecting is the unexpensive thing, the costs for preserving are extremely high. I have stored all items of the collection in containers which are used for the storage of Anti Tank Rockets. ( expensive, good climate and temperature and no insects) Problem: If you want to have a look at a certain item you need a forklifter. Original Soviet posters are very rare and expensive. But there are some reprints which cost more than an original. During the cold war the British Army produced reprints of special sov. material in a very limited number for realistic training. When the Soviets turned from enemy to friend, these posters were destroyed. Only a few were left. They are really expensive if it is possible to get them. Hope I did not bore you Regards Frank

Hello, I would love to see more posters. That is a very interesting topic and at the moment I am working on the poster collection. Unfortunately I do not speak Russian and several hundreds of posters are waiting for translation. They were found in Soviet camps in Eastern Germany. 4 of them are painted on metal plates and very heavy. The posters are dated from 1947 until 1992. Besides the posters I found a lot of matchbox labels with propaganda prints. There is an old shelter where a lot of handpainted posters is stored. I am now waiting for the permission to take them away. It will be a very dangerous job because there is not a lot of oxygen to keep me going. But as a heavy smoker I will manage the problem. Unfortunately as a second class member I can only send 150 kb so we have to wait for promotion. Then I will post some posters if somebody is interested. So meanwhile let me have a look at your posters!!!!!! Best Regards Frank

Soviet Soviet & Eastern Block Quiz

Hallo, let us try this: During WW1 our man was wounded and captured by the russians. (Bad Luck) In captivity he learned Russian and joined the Bolshewiks . The grandson of Mr. Srul Blank sent him to a certain town in the to - be- established Volga German Autonomous Soviet Socialist republic as a "Peoples Commissar". During WW 2 he spend some time in a concentration camp and left Germany to another country where he was incarcered for the third time. Having so much experience with camps I would have joined the security business. Our man made another decision and did another job from 1951 onwards. In this he was dealing with the Soviets again. For my funeral there will not attend so many people as on his. Who was he? Where was he sent to? What was his last job? Good Luck! I go and have a drink. I expect the answer when I am back. (hope I can read it) Ceers Frank -

Hallo Jim, your answer is correct The main place where The Soviets did their tests was Academgorodk in Special Department Nr.8 established 1966. The Defence Intelligence Agency published some Documents on the Pages of National Security Archives. Most times these links are not working but if they do they are very interesting. These experiments are fascinating and sometimes easy to do. Some links are to be found in Stargate collection. Regards and congratulations Frank -

Soviet Soviet & Eastern Block Quiz

If you want it a bit harder... once upon a time there were three men living in a country in Eastern Europe. In the autopsy report of the first it is said : " incapsuled bullet in the soft tissue of the left shoulder... The immediate cause of death was: 1. the aggravation of the circulatory disturbance of the brain and 2. Hemorrhage into arachnoid pia mater in the area of the corpora quadrigemina ( Special hint: his brain was chopped into 1.666 slices to find out if his genius was natural)( I know mine is, so it is not necessaryto...) The second man went into bed with Magdalena Carmen Frida y Calderon and was later killed with the pick of an ice axe. The third man wanted to take over the political power of the first after his death. The first prefered the second. The third got the job. Now the questions: Who placed the bullet into the first man's shoulder? Who stuck the ice axe into the second man`s head? What did the third man do to overtake the power from the first after his death and when was that? It is easy Good Luck Frank -
