An Army Falklands War hero awarded the Distinguished Service Cross could walk away with £100,000 when his medal goes under the hammer next month. John Phillips was awarded the naval medal -- believed to be the only one issued to a rank and file serviceman -- for trying to make safe a 1,000lb bomb dropped into HMS Antelope by an Argentinian plane. The then 39-year-old Sergeant Major and colleague Sgt James Prescott made several unsuccessful attempts and were 30ft away behind a door when a 28-second delayed fuse they had unwittingly triggered set off the bomb, killing his colleague and costing him his left arm. Here is the latest on this sad story: Keith Davies has been jailed for three years over the theft of medals worth more than $230,000 and ordered to pay reparations of $50,000. Davies stole 744 war medals from the Waiouru Military Museum between 1995 and 2002. A very rare charge of unlawfully exporting New Zealand antiquities was withdrawn. Here is the latest on this topic: In opposition, the Tories pledged to introduce an Arctic Medal if they won power. And in January this year, Mr Cameron indicated his continued support by telling MPs that the sailors who served on the Arctic Convoys had ‘missed out’. ‘Many of them are coming to the end of their lives and it would be good if we could do something more to recognise what they have done,’ he said. However, in a letter to the Leader of the Commons, Sir George Young – a long-time supporter of the Arctic heroes’ 15-year battle – Mr Cameron now says the sailors have already been recognised with a medal for the separate naval campaign in the Atlantic. He writes: ‘It is clear that the Atlantic Star Medal that was extended to those who served in the Arctic specified the convoys in its qualifying criteria. Those who took part in the Arctic Convoys have therefore been recognised and received this medal as a mark of the nation’s gratitude.’ Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2061135/Betrayal-Arctic-heroes-PM-accused-breaking-pledge-medal-war-convoy-sailors.html#ixzz1ddVCio29 Jean-Paul

Another good news story: A collection of medals honouring the heroism of the last surviving officer of the Charge of the Light Brigade was returned to Britain yesterday after half a century in an American safety deposit box. Tony Kent, a former RAF reconnaissance pilot who moved to the United States in 1946, had considered keeping his great grandfather's military decorations and personal papers in Virginia. But fearing the collection of Crimean medals, described as unique by historians, might eventually be split up and sold to US collectors, he returned to England to hand them over to his ancestor's regimental museum in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. His father's personal papers, which will be examined closely by military historians, reveal an astonishing story of British heroism by his great grandfather Captain Percy Shawe-Smith, a lieutenant and acting adjutant in the 13 Light Dragoons. Shawe-Smith was promoted to Captain and awarded the Crimean Medal with clasps for Alma, Inkerman, Balaklava and Sebastopol; the Turkish Medal, the Sardinian Medal, with a citation for distinguished conduct during the charge, and the Order of the Medjidie (5th Class). Another interesting news story: A German man who saved at least 30 people during the massacre in Norway has been awarded one of Germany’s highest honours by the President. When Gleffe went to the water he could see desperate children trying to swim to safety and jumped into a boat to help them get away. He managed to get around six people in his boat at a time and made several trips, rescuing around 30 people in total. German President Christian Wulff awarded him the Order of Merit. Here is another interesting news story concerning the Medal of Honor: FBI honors Seattle store owner for yielding Medals of Honor The owner of a Seattle Army Navy surplus store was honored by the FBI for turning over four Medal of Honor awards that his father purchased for the store over the past several decades. The medals appear to be authentic, created by a company contracted to make them. But the medals owned by the Schaloum family were never awarded to a member of the military. Repost in order to be able to read better: Medal collectors could be put off trading with New Zealanders because of the actions of former National Army Museum registrar Keith Davies, according to a dealer who bought his stolen medals. Details of charges against Davies have revealed the haul of antiquities he stole from the Waiouru museum between 1995 and 2002 is much more than just 744 war medals valued at $233,155. A World War II German soldier's pack and a helmet plate, a military statuette and 100 military histories valued at $25,700 are among the items taken. Davies, 57, pleaded guilty yesterday to seven charges of false pretences, theft, obtaining property by deception and theft as a servant. A rare charge of unlawfully exporting New Zealand antiquities was withdrawn. Read the complete article: http://tvnz.co.nz/na...lectors-4453980 Don't forget to view the very interesting video. Jamaica awarded the late reggae singer Dennis Brown with one of its highest civic honors, a fitting tribute for a musician who is more beloved than Bob Marley among many Jamaican reggae fans. Some 12 years after his death, the former child star who became known as the Crown Prince of Reggae was posthumously conferred with the Caribbean island's Order of Distinction for his contributions to reggae, which has played a huge role in Jamaica's culture and economy.
