    1. Evening Paul, Can you remember the name of the Church? John
    2. Barney, Cracking post as ever. There are a few Military Graves in the Cemetary on the Sewardstown Rd at Waltham Abbey that may interest you. I haven't the time to look into them. They are;- 146470 2Lt John St Clair Ruthven KIA 12/10/1940 aged 41(!) 14318194 J H Rider Oxs & Bucks KIA 17/06/1945 4753861 Pte E C Barker Border Regt KIA 12/04/1943 Pte Bass RAPC KIA 21/11/1943 1546971 Gnr F S Clarke RA KIA 15/12/1940 WOII A Taylor Ist Dragoon Guards RAC KIA 10/06/1940 702262 Sgt G C Neilson A/G RAF KIA 28/01/1943. At some stage, I would like to research these men, but at the moment , its finding time. Feel free to beat me to any of these enquiries. :food-smiley-004:
    3. I didn't realise there were so many Brits and Irish, even a German. Oh, always up for a fight.... maybe they had cider in the Fort....
    4. You scheister ! What I choose to wear in my fantasies is no one's business but my own....
    5. Evening Chaps, I must admit, I think it goes on its own piece of dark blue ribbon, and this is because I saw a group of 3 or 4 with the laurel leaves mountd on the end as mentioned. It was to a man who got it for defusing the ejector seat of a crashed harrier , which took over an hour, whilst the wreckage was still on fire, to recover the pilot's body. I must admit , it looked like a medal was missing.... it looked awful, but I did hear of a chap who wore his on the campaign ribbon , during which the leaves were awarded. animal
    6. I agree, but if its at auction and I get the time to do it, I always research what I can. It has saved me loads. I'm very careful now, what I put my money into.I've also got the Boer War Casualty Roll. I got it as a present, and its saved me a fortune. " Boer War KIA " my arse... usually Died of Disease ! And thats not only Ebay.
    7. BJOW, There are a number of helmet plates on "speedbid", that may interest you. John
    8. I finally saw them in the Thames the other day. A yellow one and a Green one. They were bloody low in the water, and when a barge passed the green one, it was pretty well thrown around. I thought it would sink. Wouldn't catch me in one!
    9. Yes, I have had considerable problems getting info on people of this generation and anybody else within 70 years of their death.I now don't touch them. Bon Chance ! John
    10. I've no idea either. Its similar in the Medals book to several different ribbons.None are identical, though.
    11. You do see them for sale in Antique shops in London, usually at quite high prices for tourists. I have seen alot on Ebay and Speedbid , happy hunting!
    12. Happy Days. Have just bought a WWII Infantry helmet and a black leather tanky helmet, complete with its badge. In fact, both have worn and only dropped once....!
    13. Good Evening. This one stumped me. Could it be Mediteranean Expeditionary Service?
    14. I saw a lovely Scottish sword, with the massive handguard, wilkenson sword, for ?1050.00! Whats the incentive to buy a modern sword for that , when I can buy an antique?
    15. I must admit, I cannot think of a decent Italian Tank or general equipment. Can't fault the bravery of the professional soldiers ,though. animal
    16. Oh, very droll ! Nice poem, though.
    17. Any one read ,in the last few days, about Nicky Campbell? My Dad was in the IRA? Oh :violent-smiley-017: Please!
    18. If I may quote Detlev Niemann's 'Orders,Decorataions,Award Documents,Miniatures and Cases of Issue'. 7.0514 Tieffliegervernichtungs-Abzeichen Special Badge for Shooting Down Low Flying Aircraft. Gold - destruction of 5 aircraft. Black - desruction of 1 aircraft. Remarks; There is as yet no evidence that the badge was ever officially produced or awarded. A great book by the way, I'm not really into Thirdy stuff, but the book is beautiful, and so I bought it.
    19. Bloody Yuppies.... we won't be able to take our ducks anywhere now...
    20. It would seem that this was not a battle as such. More of a recurring 'mopping up' operation. There were several large scale battles, of which the enemy faired extremely badly. There were uprisings periodically, which were put down. Many units were out there, with the Guards having more than their fair share. There is more, but I am waiting for the rest. :animal-smiley-025:
    21. So where does 'Knacker's Yard' come from?
    22. The Elephant was designed as a mobile artillary gun with a long barrelled 88 mounted. It should never have been used in the assualt mode. It should never have needed an MG if it was used in the correct role.
    23. Yes, I know what you're saying , but the British Army was about the biggest it had ever been in history at this stage. I was wondering if all the Yeomanry Units were all mounted to counter the Boer Kommando groups who were very mobile, when most of the British Army was at that time on foot.
