My Summer Project
Eric Stahlhut replied to Eric Stahlhut's topic in Germany: All Eras: The Iron Cross
thank you for all of the positive comments! at first i was hesitant to post this thread as the method/state of storage is rather negligent and embarrassing, but i am excited to go through everything and sort it all out. i am continually finding stuff that i forgot i had. it's fun to 'rediscover' stuff! i hope to use several methods of display/storage. some of my ideas are derived from viewing some of the marvelous and ingenious ways forum members have shown their collections on previous threads. i like the use of antique photo albums, for example. nice portable display! the more permanent 'bunker' concept done up with period/older furniture is also quite appealing. that will be relatively easy. on a sad note: i have recently discovered that a few years ago, the storage facility had an incident where the sprinkler system was set off in error. i have noticed that approx. 25-30 EK1/2s spanning '70/'14/'39 have sustained a bit of light rust damage to their cores. nothing ultra-drastic--most likely restorable, and the business owner assures me that i will be reimbursed by insurers. we will see how that goes.... i'm just glad i stumbled across that 1914 'propeller-clasp' EK1; otherwise those cores prolly would have kept rusting away... cheers, everyone! -

EK 1914 EK1 1914

notice the length of the post; quite handy if one were to attach this to a heavy outer garment--but could be problematic if affixed to a lighter piece of clothing -

EK 1914 Enamelled 1914 Iron Cross

i can't quote a current market value (sorry) but i believe they were worn by civilians. early 'spende', pehaps? the military would wear either a 2nd class ribbon or an awarded/private purchase 1st class example. -
EK 1914 Enamelled 1914 Iron Cross
Eric Stahlhut replied to taucher's topic in Germany: All Eras: The Iron Cross
sometimes one sees these crosses rather ambitiously categorized as 'prinzen'-especially if they still have the silver wash intact (hard to find)-but i have always regarded them as patriotic pieces. -
so when do some of you guys think this pin was made? p.s. just curious: are you guys familiar with tinnies made by czech makers during the 20/30/40s? personally, i think the detail, design, and quality of material blows away the german makers from the 30/40s. but that's another story best saved for another time, i guess...sorry for the tangent! cheers!

My Summer Project

patience, mr. r.! this is only a current example of the sad state of my collecting affairs. quite a mess and quite a challenge to sort out. most of everything is still in storage at a different location. if all goes as planned i hope to have my own nifty little collecting hovel where things will be displayed correctly. -

Gents, thank you very much for your insights! i do not claim to have any knowledge about this type of item (notice i posted it in the entirely wrong subforum; duh). my focus is generally limited to medals and badges. i assumed that the tip was made that way--i did not realize that the tip was broken and then reworked. also: i don't know how to tell the difference between a "true" damascus blade and a simulated one. the only thing i can do right now is take a few further pics and post them for your comments. i will do this soon and then edit them into this post. again, thank you for viewing and typing!
