    1. Too bad it cannot be proven that it was the General's awards. I see it is now for sale on WAF?

      Hi Don,

Yeh now up for sale.....i just bought one medal bar too many and now am broke. :speechless:

As for proof, there are no docs with this group so i am going on the previous owners word. I own a few medal bars that came with "no proof" and no-one seemed to have a problem with them. This one looks fine too, all original. I see where you are coming from though and it is too bad. The combo is a bit common to say they belong to Frantz but these were the awards he received (talking about the medal bar in particular here) from what i read. IMO just because there is no positive ID does NOT mean they are not his awards.

      Kind regards

      Pierce

    3. The mark is Meybauer's.

It might be NICE to.... actually see... the ENTIRE bar? I mean-- for posterity-- before the thing is wrenched apart out of idle curiosity about... the suspension ring.

Wrenched apart? :speechless1: Who will be wrenching it apart?? :catjava: It was just an innocent question about the suspension ring........... I got the seller to take some extra shots of it from these different angle, doing NO damage to the bar. I have never seen one like it before......

    4. Hoping to but a new medal bar with this Silesian Eagle on it. This one i am unsure about. Is it good or bad? There is a maker mark on the reverse.

      Does the reverse look ok?

What about the way it is attached to the medal bar?

I thought these medals usually had the jump ring attached to the head of the eagle. This one seems to be sewn on to the bar by something attached to the back of the eagles head.

      Thanks

    5. VERY common and impossible to say. I've had black backings on both navy and army.

Since the 1911 version of the 1905 Luitpold Jubilee Medal was given to all officers with Bavarian nationality, not just Bavarian army personnel, could just as well be army OR navy. Nothing "extra" to indicate one or the other. This is, after all, simply a WW1 pair.

With that length of time in, a WW2 Colonel level anyway.

Nice old stock Godet metal backing, not with their usual pale gray cloth backing.

Thanks Rick. I was thinking it woud have been hard to say.

At least we have a rank to go with it, thanks.

    6. I hope you can find a photo of both of them wearing these medal bars.

While Meendsen-Bohlken HAD those awards on his medal bar, so could at least a dozen other naval officers. There is no way to identify a WW1 pair unless a photo establishes the exact medal bar was being worn by him.

Meisel had a Sudeten Medal, a Memel Medal, a Spanish 1936-39 campaign Medal and I'm not sure (never seen a good enough photo) what as a 4th ribbon after his long services, worn on his ribbon bar in wartime photos. Perhaps he never updated his awards after 1938.

The only other naval SA3bX/HH/nothing else person I find was Marine-Oberstabsarzt Dr. Dietmar Sieber (1886-19??) who served in the navy from 1907 to at least 1931 but disappears thereafter (certainly not in the navy in 1936) but pops back in during the war as Flottenarzt zV before retiring 01.02.44. Since there were no long service awards between 1920 and 1936, if he retired between 1931 and then he wouldn't have been entitled to the pair even if recalled during the war since awards had been suspended.

      Hi Rick,

I was thinking the Vizeadmiral group could not have been IDed due to the combo so i am gald it came with a name.

As for the Admiral Meisel medal bar...i just assumed he did not update his medal bar...common enough that? :catjava:

I did a search on the net and i seen a wartime photo of him...a very long ribbon bar, all the awards you mention above seem to be on it. I see he also had the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun. Which Grade was it? Perhaps that is the 4th ribbon after the long service awards?

      Thanks for your input.

P.S Thanks to everyone else for their positive comments. :rock on:

    7. Thank you all for your input and especially to Rick. Having this ribbon bar in hand i agree with him, the tabs have not been opened at the back, this bar is in somewhat brittle condition. As for the red ribbon...looks the same colour as the stripe in the HCX imo...could be the photographer... .

The name was mis-spelt, his sur-name is Flegel, not Flegal..........i went to the Axis Research website and got this....picture matches the ribbon bar but they have a habit on that site of getting the wrong picture with the name. :ninja:

Let me know your expert opinions on this possibllity.

      Thanks again
