Soviet Comments & Opinions on a Badge of Honor
Bryan replied to Stogieman's topic in USSR: Soviet Orders, Medals & Decorations
I think it's a fake of the Type 2 Variation 1. or 2. I don't like the details on the back, the lack of patina and the engraved number. I'm no specialist because I have never seen a real one, but it's missing points for me. By the way, McDaniel's book says that # 1017 should be in the Type 1 range, so it shpuld be definitely wrong. -

He has the document with the case. He said it is dated from 1969 and it was awarded to a Russian named something like "Jukov Jovko Khristov". And no he didn't research it. I don't think he will ever research it though. -

A friend of mine own a Red Star in a similar red case. Does it mean it was also awarded to an American veteran? Should I ask him the serial number? -

That seems my last post as been erased. I said that #2 and #3 help me to find the answer. I have to admit ?I didn't really knew Merkulov and I have made some research about key Georgian communist leader to find him. Now try to answer my question in post #249. Find why he has been awarded Hero of Socialist Labor. -

Be carefull with that kind of helmet. Fake liner, fake stamp and probably a post-WWII shell.

Thanks Rick!

Richie and RLB. I really like your Soviet headgears collection. Richie, it would be interesting to see more pictures from your Schvartz helmet. I also have in my collection 2 SSh-36 (1 with incomplet liner and 1 ground-dug), 1 other SSh-39 with the red star, 1 WWII SSh-40 and 2post war Soviet helmets in my collection. If you are interested I can post pictures of the one you would like. I do not have any WWII pilotka yet.

SSh-40 Whitewashed helmet. The helmet is undated and it has the initial of the first owner. It bears the initial caracteristic of a WWII SSh-40 although. I'm not sure at 100% if this is a period whitewashed helmet. I bought it from a reliable source in Soviet militaria, but I'm always sceptical as I haven,t seen in real life an other Soviet WWII whitewashed helmet. I like to believe it is original.

Are they many variations of this kind of military release documents? I'm not sure if I use the proper term in English. Please correct me if so. Here is the only one I have in my collection.

Here is my reissued SSh-39 denazified German Luftschutz helmet. It was issued in 1941 by the LMZ factory (Lysma Metalurgical Factory) near Perm. I like it !

Here is a special helmet from my colection that I have already shown on an other forum. It is a SSh-39 "Blokadnik" helmet with the first type liner. It is called a "Blokadnik", because it was produced in Leningrad during the 900 days siege. The quality of the shell is not so good and the steel used is very thin. Rivets are made of cooper. The liner is the rare leather variation found adapted on this SSh-39 helmet. I have not gotten a satisfactory answer as to why the liner was located with such a wide gap in the front but they all look like that. Not more than 15 000 pieces from this helmet were ever produced.
