Regional newspapers are one of the key sources to find new HHOXs. A number of us have now looked systematically through many newspapers, and I think it's time for a review: which regions are still (mostly or entirely) missing? In newspapers from which regions would it be most promising to still find new HHOX recipients (esp. totally new ones, not just first names, although those are certainly still very interesting)?

Going again through this thread, I would say the status is this:

Fairly well covered:

Nordrhein-Westfalen (ex. Münster and others, but some cities less, see below)

Thüringen (only some parts, esp. Jena)

Bavaria: Digitized libraries do not seem to turn up much, newspapers like Münchner Neueste Nachrichten are being digitized, but it is not clear to me anyway whether there are many Bavarian HHOXs missing  

I think what would be most interesting to look through is (digitized) newspapers from:

1) Berlin: while the Vossische Zeitung covers the death notices well, it does not list awards. It seems that the awards might be listed in the local Berlin newspapers from particular quarters of the city. Not sure. Any help welcome. 

2) Württemberg: Stuttgart, anyone?

3) More Thuringian states: what about Schwarzburg, Weimar, Altenburg etc.?

4) Schleswig-Holstein: Flensburg, Kiel etc.? Especially award notices other than Navy. 

5) Hannover / Braunschweig / Anhalt: any relevant newspapers digitized yet? I found that the Magdeburgische Zeitung/Anhalter Anzeiger is in the process, but apparently progress is very slow. 

Any directions or help where to find more: most appreciated. 

And of course, any other comments are welcome!

Only things I have are the Hohenzollern and the Württemberg Frederick...

If I remember correctly, the Ernestiner Hausorden continued to be awarded post-1918 by the Dukes.

Looks like an Oberleutnant in the picture.

The Militärarchiv should have information about him.

I think this is Oberst Rolf-Günther Bickel (1891-1954). He served in the Hessian FAR 61.
