Thanks for your replies! FAR 73 makes sense, because he was from East Prussia. The date is definitely Jan 1915.

This picture was taken in January 1915. Shoulderstraps show a "13", is that the Field Artillery bomb above it?

I also presume he is a Vizefeldwebel?

Do we know when exactly he went aD? Because if he was in that early, he might already have had an XXV.

Yes, I think there is no other explanation. I thought because Kästner studied law, and this Hauck was a Kriegsgerichtsrat, maybe there is a connection.

But scratch another one: Olt v. dem Hagen, per 1914 in IR 153, kommandiert zum Flieger-Bat. 1, REKj3, RK3a, SA3b, HSH3b, HSAE.

Crienitz was Olt in IR 87. No awards by 1914, but the Ehrenrangliste shows him as Major aD who had been on the General Staff of the 1. Marine-Division. Not sure what to make of this, but Mecklenburg and Hamburg - those were typical Navy awards...

It's definitely not Karl von Apell. He was originally in FAR 83, and, according to the RL 1914, "kommandiert zum Flieger-Bat. Nr. 3". He already had a PrKO4, SLH4 and WF3b by then.

That's interesting. This precedence would be correct for a Volkspflege award, which by the time this photograph was taken had replaced the DRK awards.

Correct, and I first thought this must be the Volkspflege medal. However, the first time the DRK ribbon shows up is on the picture in posts #3 and 4. And that picture was taken between May and August 1939, while the Volkspflege awards were first awarded in December 1939.

My own explanation is that there was some confusion regarding the status of these awards. Probably, with the introduction of the Volkspflege awards, the wearers of the earlier awards also thought that their medals were now raised from organizational to national level.

This mount can be spotted easily as a post-war one because of the new ribbons. But if I had had the outfitter use old ribbons, I indeed doubt that the reconstruction could have been identified as such.

Good point. I didn't show you this late-war photo. Here, he's wearing the Olympic medal in last place. That's the way he wore it in the end, so that's why I had them mounted in this order.

I think this ribbon bar belonged to one officer who probably died during WW1, because there is no LS medal. Rick can probably help you to identify this ribbon bar.

It could also be a wartime bar. Prussian 1914 Hauptmann combination with BMV4X - if the ribbon is correctly used - as a prewar award for Southwest Africa.

Thanks, but no medals or other items survived the war. I only know what he was awarded from close-ups of his ribbon bar. As far as I know, he kept most decorations in his house which was burnt down in 1945.

However, I have made some efforts to reconstruct his medal bar. He probably never had one originally, because there are no photos showing it. I know some might find this reconstruction questionable, but I don't intend to ever sell it, it's just for my display.

So here it is, shown for the first time (the awards are originals, ribbons are new):

Scratch Georg Freytag, he was Hptm in FAR11 and had a PrKO4X in 1914.

It's not Hilmer Freiherr von Bülow, he was a Luftwaffe GenLt and had the HHOX.

Old Erich, back again! Not Hessen, though, but Oldenburg - and an Oldenburg Peter Friedrich Ludwig.

Discount Mardersteig, he was a reserve Hptm and had a number of other awards, including an LD1.

Thanks a lot for looking! I have now looked into the regimental history of FAR 10. The first time that he is listed as Lt dR is in a ranklist from 3.8.1918.
