    2. These were in the box with the armbands - so, they have the same provenance. Both are named for separate units - your comments will be gratefully received. http://gmic.co.uk/uploads/monthly_03_2012/post-6209-0-17425200-1331047866.jpgCLICK TO ENLARGE

    9. Have had some very good medal groups in this week - all with lots of smaller items. One group - which will be posted soon on British Medals - had a number of arm bands - including these German arm bands. He was a former member of Royal Horse Artillery and of the Essex Constabulary - during the war he was a Military Police Officer. So, every opportunity to acquire good 'souvenirs'. I will be surprised if these aren't genuine - not so sure on the badges I will put on the next post . http://gmic.co.uk/uploads/monthly_03_2012/post-6209-0-10730300-1331045783.jpgCLICK TO ENLARGE
    10. Good points Mark. During Victoria's reign I could certainly see a memorial aspect coming into play. I wonder do any other members have examples that are prone to change ? I have a personal feeling that we will find this fashion to have been for Countries where the population were close to their Army.
    11. This little article with the 50th Ann. of SA dog handlers , continues our earlier post on the SA dog unit and also will help in the other post about earlier uniforms. The story is self explanatory. Well done to them. CLICK TO ENLARGE
    12. Jeff - I've wondered about this as well. I find that the 1879 Zulu War Medal was particularly prone to being brooch - or, pendant mounted. I think the fact that many of the British were from local Regt's and not really military, prompted them to have the conversion in order for their wives to wear them. They were rightly proud of their achievements. Although I'm not in favour of this - it does add another aspect to their history ?
    13. CLICK TO ENLARGE The 1862 International Exhibition was the successor to the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park - known as the Crystal Palace. The building was built especially for this later exhibition and, similarly to the one in 1851 it showcased British developments - and also those from overseas. Unfortunately, it came in for critiscism and was not a great success - the building was pulled down in 1864. However, this was to London's benefit. The position that it had been placed-on became the new Natural History Museum in Cromwell Road - and this has enthralled numberless millions of young people who have visited over the years. Still one of my favourite places to visit. Your medallion was probably to either one of the exhibitor's - or, in view of it's way of naming - perhaps a thankyou to one of the organisers. Try looking his name-up in the 1862 Who's Who ? Mervyn
    14. If it has both ends open - then, as Mike says, it is a napkin ring. If it has a base, then it is probably a table holder for cigarettes or, matches. Mervyn
    15. There was book published on British firearms markings. Can't remember the name though. To be flippant - with the head and x's - could it be a head count ?
    16. Exactly that, Megan. Everyone has the right to their own views - although we have the right not to agree with them. However, by making the offer, the Government makes itself look silly when they refuse. This is why they have an Honours Committee in the first place. Mervyn
    17. Demir - congratulations on this excellent research book. A lot of work and you can be proud.. You must also post this on the Turkish site - however, I hope you get a good response from this site. Mervyn
    18. Greg - now, that was all a surprise. Good reading and I admire your tenacity in following your goals. You should have mentioned Logo Designer for GMIC. Anyway - A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Mervyn

    20. A nice evening Gentleman's dress stick . Solid silver top - 1920's. The cane is a male Malacca from the Island of Malacca in the Indonesian Islands. http://gmic.co.uk/uploads/monthly_02_2012/post-6209-0-35062900-1330529615.jpgCLICK TO ENLARGE
