Austria-Hungary Imperial Austrian Military Merit Cross
Josef Rietveld replied to Noor's topic in Austro-Hungarian Empire
I'am with valter. they had to change tapferkeit for fortitudini as the hungarians stated after the death of emperor franz joseph that the won't accept any longer bravery decorations for hungarian citizens with german inscription. this was also the reason why the kriegskreuz für zivilverdienste got (a bit earlier) a latin inscription. regards josef -
Dear Forumites, a general question. Over the years i have seen several japanese order cases for foreigners (gold on lacquer, tassels in red (Rising Sun) or darkblue (Sacred Treasue). Finally i now got an affordable one from italy. Are there still different cases for foreigners ? i don't think so but i'am not sure. I know this cases from before 1914 and showa pre-1945. I have seen a 3rd class Risung Sun Order a french NATO-General got in the 1970ies and that was a standard black case. Does anybody know if and when the japanese chanced this? generally i think this cases are a bit rare, because the don't appear to often on the market. regards Josef

Beautifull, thanks for sharing. I guess a cased 3rd Class Auspicious Clouds is hard to come by. How long did it took you to get one? josef

Order of the Rising Sun 6th class in leather case
Josef Rietveld replied to Brian Wolfe's topic in Japan
It is not surprising but different from that i know from europe. There it was common to purchase, if you could afford it, additional decorations for bars or for wearing - to protect the original awarded piece. So for me, the idea of buying an additional empty box is always a bit funny also. josef @Brian, thanks for showing. i see no significant differences between the soft-leather-case you presented and the one i have shown here before. Only the pieces inside were different. So i guess, this cases have been in use for a longer period of time or again someone mixed boxes and pieces togehther. -
Order of the Rising Sun 6th class in leather case
Josef Rietveld replied to Brian Wolfe's topic in Japan
So this does mean that the orders in this soft-leather-cases are awarded one's and these officers only purchased the empty leather boxes? Unbelievable josef -
Did this one run under insanity, or was this piece something special i didn't see? EBAY josef

This was a good hint I could only compare a showa RSO4 to the ROS3 - sorry my caliper lacks battery. The showa-piece, as hopfully visible on the pic, is definitely thicker then the neck-decoration. regards josef

a real eyecatcher. i always found the jrc-decorations highly underestimated in comparism to their carftmanship. josef

Thanks for the input. I have got a lot to learn. Will it help to provide better pics of the paulina-leaves? @Tim, thx for your comment, so it won't be an instant divorce. As far as i understand Tim, measuring the lines in the paulina-leave is by now a approach but gives no 100-percent-reliability. can this method differentiate between meiji, taisho and showa or only between meiji and showa? Another question on RSO-Commanders. Did someone found out if there is a kind of chronology in the way the neck-ribbons are fixed together. I saw at least two different clasp-systems.

Dear Club-members, as most collectors i seek to round up ODMS i own with the matching case. Four years ago i acquired a lot including an empty lacquer case for a Rising Sun Order 3rd class. Last autumm after some years of more or less intensive search i managed to purchase a convenient risung sun neck order at baldwins. But i don't know exactely if this i a perfect marriage or a messalliance. So my question to the experienced japan-collectors: do they match together? Both Showa? josef
-
Of course i want such kind of marriage. i already tried it with another RSO-set i will present in a seperate thread. josef
-
I found no makers mark on my RSO4 and just recognised angrily that it seems that somebody refixed the pauwlonia-suspension to the order. Anyway here are my pictures, again sorry cause i'am limited here to 110 K josef

@Tim beautifull pieces you are showing. Unfortunately i'am just a novice to collection japanese ODM's and have only questions not answers. So I see the point but have no idea what could be the correct exegesis of this facts. I can show you my only (unboxed) RSO4 but i'am afraid that is the only contribution i can give. Could it be so easy that someone put a showa-piece in a meiji-case - not really or? josef

another question: does silver kanji indicate a wartime award? one of mei meiji-pieces has silver writing on the case AND a small rice-paper with other kanji-letters. Is someone able to read this (maybe a name or a unit) thanks in advance josef @tim, that is a good idea, maybe we can work out some differences

thanks Paul, i guess my set dates from showa-period before 1945? there was another one on ebay (not mine) that was sold recently My link josef
