"Soviet" and Andreas, Great threads. The thought of looking for past posts on the subject did not even cross my mind. "I need to get me one of 'dem" Railway Plaques... Dave, your tunic and cap set are truly breathtaking. Really... Kindly be sure to post more of him when you complete his display. I have an MTC set, but I'm not certain that it belongs in this Civil Railways thread.

I would like to begin creation of a thread where all interested parties can participate by showing off all their awards, uniform material, insignia, photography, and ANY etcetera-etcetera-etcetera, that has do with the Soviet State Railway System. The topic is fascinating to me being a fan of Soviet Rail Station Architecture. Especially the beautiful stations in Odessa, Simferopol, and Sevastopol. Being the sentimental Ameri-turd as I am, I also recall spending greater portions of an hour, at the least, in a hot or cold Volga GAZ M21, waiting by the crossing at Inkermann, for whomever is doing what-ever to finish up and let us cross in either direction that we were heading at the time, and loving it all as those repainted blue & yellow cars with the old Soviet plaques removed and for sale on ebay removed passed me by in the windscreen. In sentimental memory of course... ... but at the time, it was quite inconvienient I have to admit. So, the New Yorker in me that faithfully rode the IRT, BMT, & IND Lines, along with the LIRR in days long past prompts me to do SUBWAY first:

Soviet VVS Mechanic's School badge? Opinions please
RichieC replied to shako_uk's topic in USSR: Soviet: Other Militaria
I am with Stoo on that one... However, it was one of the first out there, so cheers to it. Many thanks for taking the time to make the scans, Order of Victory. Here in the second image posted, is an image of an example of a Flight Engineer's badge, model of 1949. Strangely enough, this one has a pinback. Both of the two examples that I have owned in the past have had screwbacks. I assume that they were early examples... Chime in guys, please, if you know otherwise... Back to the Furlan book; The one shown there, judging by it's width compared to the other badges shown, dates it from the late 1960s. I still think that Brian's (thanks for the clarification Dan, and nice to "see you", by the way) badge is a handmade "trench-art" version of a 1930s era VVS Mechanic's school badge. First image is a cover scan of a "just OK" reference about badges, in my opinion, of course. This particular book is out of print, but I have noticed that a few do come up for sale every so often on ebay or from guys like Alexei Merezhko. I believe that Igor Moiseyev's collectrussia.com sells a more accurate and comprehensive reference book about badges on the website called "Avers"(?). In any case, we seem to be deviating from the topic of cap stars here... Perhaps the moderator can do a bit of editing/moving/merging so as to keep us "on track"? -

Brian, If it is possible, would you kindly scan the page from your book? -
This one seems to be yet another mystery... I suppose I should do a little "picking" (picking of some brains that is), before we write it off as "fuflo"...

Here is another interesting piece that I do not own, but had the opportunity to photograph recently. I have never seen the likes of this type before with it's seemingly multi-piece construction. It would have been interesting to see the reverse, but the delicacy of its leather cap host and the rusty tin attaching prongs prohibited that...

...or part of one? In any case, shown here is an image of an MTC cap badge from the same era as the sleeve insignia I posted earlier. It appears to be about 75+ mm in width. I do not understand why they are different though... Again, my ignorance concerning "modern' stuff is at hand here. Perhaps they changed the design to match the sleeve insignia at a latter date? Or, was the sleeve insignia deleted all-together in favor of a cap badge in a design such as yours? ???

I know little to nothing about "modern" stuff (I refer to post 1960), but your MTC emblem could very well be an officer's sleeve badge also.

Here is the final analysis from Den Stoo: "On this star there are complexities, the plough is very well executed, in accuracy as on original stars. All rest does not inspire trust. At my side there are two more very good experts on stars with a plough, but they have not stated the opinion. I can consult to them at a meeting, but is assured, that they will tell too most, as I." In any case, as far as this one is concerned; "It is what it is" as I always say... If any further enlightment is transferred to me, you can be certain that I will post it here.

Soviet VVS Mechanic's School badge? Opinions please
RichieC replied to shako_uk's topic in USSR: Soviet: Other Militaria
I don't know what to say about this badge other than that it appears TO ME as a hand-made thing that closely resembles a 1930s era VVS Mechanic's School badge. The star itself seems to be of 1950s vintage. -
There is another guy that thinks it is a copy, a legit "fake until proven real" opinion. However, all he seems to be dwelling in is the stud. Den has optimism and disagrees with him until all the angles are covered...
-
OK Stewart, now you need to measure the thickness of the star's body. Do you own, or have access to an accurate precision measuring device? Also, how are your fairing on a black light to test the enamel? These are Den asking these questions.

Try and find a smaller magnet Stoo and double-check. It is important to know if it is "magnetic".
