Sal Williams Posted June 19, 2005 Posted June 19, 2005 I got this little guy for free and found it very interesting. It is a raucherkarte which is a cigarette ration card. At first I was perplexed as to why the rations had not been used but then it dawned on me,... it is valid from february through march 1945. There most likely were no shops that HAD cigarettes that late in the war so the ration card was useless! This seemed like the closest forum for this sort of thing, but if there is a better spot for it please feel free to move this post!Best, Sal
Guest Rick Research Posted June 19, 2005 Posted June 19, 2005 People (over here too) who were non-smokers saved tobacco rations to trade for other things, butts for butter and so on.Saarbr?cken fell to U.S. forces the third week in March, so you're right-- already in the Saar pocket, probably nothing in stock anyway.
Bob Hunter Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 (edited) ...and don't forget the old "A" ration card on this home front. Edited July 5, 2005 by Bob Hunter
Avitas Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 I have a similar late-war ration card that I received with a ww2 Nazi pack of cigarrettes I just picked up. It seems my card was half used up before Dusseldorf fell, or the soldier was captured or any number of scenarios played out.Cheers,Pat
