Ulsterman Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 I bought these this weekend. The maroonish one with 2 center stripes has that 1940s plastic coating so popular 50 years ago. the other one has a '1970s" feel to it, but I can't i.d. them. Any thoughts? CAP, ROTC, NG maybe?
Ulsterman Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 OK- I managed to id the bottom one-Philippines Independence ribbon @ 1950
David S Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 (edited) It could be The US Presidential Medal of Merit, at least the ribbon colors are the same.Look here : http://www.answers.com/topic/presidential-medal-for-meritHere's a pic of the medal just in case Edited April 4, 2007 by David S
Ulsterman Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 well, it would fit! It's old-you can tell . I am chuffed!
David S Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 A simplisticly designed ribbon as well.So far only Brazil, Denmark, and Japan have similiar designs. Most ribbons with two central white stripes like this have a contrasting color inbetween.I'm still looking though.
Lukasz Gaszewski Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 The upper one looks like the Academic Award Ribbon, awarded to NJROTC cadets, or the Academic Achievement Ribbon, awarded to NSCC cadets (although the central stripes should be white rather than yellowish).Lukasz
Ed_Haynes Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 Actually, it looks like the plastic cover on the upper one is so yellow and discolored that it is almost impossible to tell the colors for real, but I'd guess the center stripes are/were white. To what degree is there any ROTC ribbon standardization? When I last knew about these programs, everyone pretty much "did their own thing".
Lukasz Gaszewski Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 Well, it seems that each service has its own set of ribbons and they do not overlap at all. Army ROTC and Army Junior ROTC have developed ribbon patterns in several categories to cover different types of achievement. The significance of many of these ribbons though has been left to regional commanders' decision. I have tried to prepare a possibly complete rackbuilder for ROTC and other cadet corps awards. You wil find it at the http://www.medals.lava.pl site. Unfortunately the server is down for maintenance at the moment and it will probably be so throughout Easter. Best regards,Lukasz
David S Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 I've still been looking. The only ROTC, JROTC, Cadet Corps . . .etc ribbon it comes close to isThe General Billy (???) Mitchell Award that is given out by the Civil Air Patrol to cadets. It was instituted in 1964It's about half way down the pagehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Awards_and_de...ivil_Air_Patrol
Lukasz Gaszewski Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 Could be too... But the white stripes here are closer to each other and the ribbon has clearly seen darker edges. NJROTC Academic Award / NSCCAcademic Achievement Ribbon. CAP Gen. Billy Mitchell Award.Best,Lukasz
David S Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 NJROTC Academic Award / NSCCAcademic Achievement RibbonI think you've got it. The edges are the same.
Ulsterman Posted April 13, 2007 Author Posted April 13, 2007 (edited) It's almost certainly the medal of merit. The lady I bought this from got it from a clear out at the supply depot at Fort Devens near Boston, Mass. I also got a dozen WW2 vintage bars of all sorts, including VFW and Guard. Ed_Haynes Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 I'd agree with Ulsterman. I think many are getting confused by the plastic covering that has badly discolored.
