    Gentlemen,

I am looking for a photo of the fern frond emblem attached to ribbon bars of NZ bravery decorations for a subsequent award.

    Thanks for your assistance :)

Is it the same design as gallantry medals, Johnsy?

Are you seeking the bar for the medal or the ribbon bar device, Lukasz? I thought the latter?

How common are these? How many real New Zealand awards have had repeat recipients? Not many, I'd think.

    From the Kiwis Royal Warrant:

    3. Design of Bars

The Bars to the Awards shall, -

    (a) For the New Zealand Cross, the New Zealand Bravery Star, and the New Zealand Bravery Decoration, be of silver, oblong in shape, and bearing two New Zealand fern fronds.

    (b) For the New Zealand Bravery Medal, be of bronze, oblong in shape, and bearing two New Zealand fern fronds.

The description appears to be the same, and knowing all government's penny pinching ways, I can't imagine that they would strike a completely different bar for the Antartica Medal.

Thank you for your response. What I actually need is a coiled fern frond , used as an appurtenance when ribbon bars alone are worn. I believe they look alike for both gallantry and bravery decorations. I think they are not frequent indeed.

    Cheers,

    Lukasz

From the NZ Gallantry Awards Royal Warrant: -

"The emblems to be worn on the ribbon of an Award, when the ribbon is worn alone, are, -

For the Victoria Cross for New Zealand, a small bronze representation of the cross, which shall be worn on the ribbon of the Award, and for each Bar awarded an additional emblem shall be worn on the ribbon:

For the New Zealand Gallantry Star and the New Zealand Gallantry Decoration, a small silver representation of an uncoiled fern frond, which shall be worn on the ribbon for each Bar awarded:

For the New Zealand Gallantry Medal, a small bronze representation of an uncoiled fern frond, which shall be worn on the ribbon for each Bar awarded."

I think this is what you are looking for. This was the best I could locate Lukasz, photos must be few and far between.

The New Zealand ribbon page given, without citation above, is Antonio's.

    See also Lukasz's page.

Thanks Ed. That looks nice, is that a Maori design?

Yes, New Zealand has been very good about incorporating Maori designs, colours, and languages.

Ought to have said: I've been in touch with the Director of the New Zealand Honours Secretariat, who says that it is indeed a curled fern frond emblem, & that he has ordered some professional photography 'to web and to print standard' to be done of both the ribbon emblem & the bar.

Most of the NZ orders were designed by his predecessor, Phillip O'Shea, and there are some notes about the designs at http://www.dpmc.govt.nz/honours/overview/d...n-insignia.html - and more on each individual honour on its own page at that site.
