That eliminates any chance of him flying. Secondly, if the uniform was related to flight, he would have Litzen on his collar. It looks like a pocket watch in a wrist carrier. This was a common way of wearing this watch during the war. Wristwatches with sweep seconds and features useful to other technical troops like artillerymen, certainly used by pilots.
