"The coins -- some gold, others platinum, but mostly silver -- were in an underground vault below 4 World Trade Center that belonged to ScotiaMocatta, the precious-metals trading unit of Bank of Nova Scotia, also known as Scotiabank. A Bank of Nova Scotia spokeswoman said a coin specialist and wholesaler approached Bank of Nova Scotia and offered to buy some of the coins from the Toronto bank. The coins are being sold in plastic coin holders emblazoned with the phrase "9-11-01 WTC Ground Zero Recovery." The bank isn't involved in the sale of the coins." "It's morbid, disgusting and shocks the senses that any individual or corporation could capitalize on the Sept. 11 tragedy in this horrid way," said Scott A. Travers..." Guest Darrell Posted July 20, 2007 Share Posted July 20, 2007 (edited) September 11 was my first day of work in New York after law school and taking the bar exam. I left work and went to Ground Zero. There were a bunch of us who were military and were caught in the city - regulars on leave, reservists and National Guard, from every service and ranging from privates to colonels. We formed teams and joined with the police and fire and other rescue workers. It was initially search and rescue, but pretty quickly came to be search and recovery as there wasn't anyone alive to find. As sad as that was, that is actually a testament to those first responders who gave their lives, because they managed to get out of the area most of the people who could get out before the towers collapsed. Otherwise there could easily have been over 20,000 dead as initially feared.Dave kudos to you and the rest involved in the efforts post 11th.Hopefully you are not suffering from the respiratory problems so many of the workers eventually came down with. Theres no doubting that there a piece of history. The 2001 one example seems to be the most popular, however, I believe that that the 1987 is the rarest, if thats the right word. So picture this, why would anybody put 5000 pcs of a 10 pesos from Uruguay into a vault under the world trade center ? Is there any good explanation for that ? It just does not make any sense. On its own without being under the world trade center in a vault would this be considered a valuable coin? Well I check that out and right now Non WTC this coin sells for $13.50 Buy It Now. So I guess not a valuable coin if it does not come from the WTC Vault. So what where 5000 of these coins doing there ? Did one individual have all those coins sitting there for a reason was it at the time a cheap way to buy Silver to hedge that the silver price would go up? Maybe but I don?t know, or is there something else that is at play here. I haven't seen ANYTHING about this in the local news media, nor i think they even mentioned it!! Very strange. I must say I am inclined to agree with you here. The only thing I will say in this stories defence, is that the company that graded & slabbed them, surely they wouldn`t put there name to something that was in any way dodgey, one would assume that this could do irreparable damage to their reputation.
