peter monahan Posted July 15, 2007 Posted July 15, 2007 ChrisWhy you go pick on dem Nigerians? That is capitalism and the entrepeneurial spirit in their purest form: "Hello stupid person! Please send me your lifes' s savings and I will keep it after promising you whatever unbelieveable thing you want - millions of dollars, world peace, clean air..." Oh, sorry, that's my politician speech. Har Har!Works for casinos too: "All you suckers throw all your money into this machine and we promise someday to somebody some money... maybe. If we feel like it... Or not"The only difference in the Twin Towers scam is the added bonus of being able to appeal to people's patriotism as well as their credulity. Which I personally find quite sleazy, BTW, but it's different from what hundreds of other scam artists do only in the degree of it's tastelessness!Peter
bigjarofwasps Posted July 20, 2007 Author Posted July 20, 2007 SEPTEMBER 11 COINS An August 6 Wall Street Journal article put the spotlight on "September 11" coins being marketed as relics from the 2001 World Trade Center attacks. "The coins -- some gold, others platinum, but mostly silver -- were in an underground vault below 4 World Trade Center that belonged to ScotiaMocatta, the precious-metals trading unit of Bank of Nova Scotia, also known as Scotiabank. A Bank of Nova Scotia spokeswoman said a coin specialist and wholesaler approached Bank of Nova Scotia and offered to buy some of the coins from the Toronto bank. The coins are being sold in plastic coin holders emblazoned with the phrase "9-11-01 WTC Ground Zero Recovery." The bank isn't involved in the sale of the coins." "It's morbid, disgusting and shocks the senses that any individual or corporation could capitalize on the Sept. 11 tragedy in this horrid way," said Scott A. Travers..." "This is a rather extreme case of making money with the World Trade Center," said Ute Wartenberg Kagan, executive director of the American Numismatic Society..." ScotiaBank's 12 tons of goldScotiaBank's 12 tons of gold and 30 million ounces of silver, buried beneath the WTC, have been recovered and are being convoyed by Brink's trucks to another location.
Guest Darrell Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 (edited) September 11 was my first day of work in New York after law school and taking the bar exam. I left work and went to Ground Zero. There were a bunch of us who were military and were caught in the city - regulars on leave, reservists and National Guard, from every service and ranging from privates to colonels. We formed teams and joined with the police and fire and other rescue workers. It was initially search and rescue, but pretty quickly came to be search and recovery as there wasn't anyone alive to find. As sad as that was, that is actually a testament to those first responders who gave their lives, because they managed to get out of the area most of the people who could get out before the towers collapsed. Otherwise there could easily have been over 20,000 dead as initially feared.Dave kudos to you and the rest involved in the efforts post 11th.Hopefully you are not suffering from the respiratory problems so many of the workers eventually came down with. bigjarofwasps Posted July 30, 2007 Author Posted July 30, 2007 Found this, thought I`d share it with you. What are your thoughts?....
bigjarofwasps Posted September 12, 2008 Author Posted September 12, 2008 I was surfing the net & came across this website that I thought might be of interest to anyone who collects coins recovered from the World Trade Centre?http://www.wtc911coins.com/
Schwartzvogel2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 WTC Eagles seem to variey drastically in price, as to what there value is, well thats down to the collecting world, and what people are prepared to pay for them. Theres no doubting that there a piece of history. The 2001 one example seems to be the most popular, however, I believe that that the 1987 is the rarest, if thats the right word.
bigjarofwasps Posted September 25, 2008 Author Posted September 25, 2008 Okey so this eagle wasn`t recovered, from the WTC, however, I think its attractive none the less......
bigjarofwasps Posted September 25, 2008 Author Posted September 25, 2008 No sure of this one, what do you guys think?
bigjarofwasps Posted September 25, 2008 Author Posted September 25, 2008 Found this link, which I thought might also be of interest...........http://merrickmint.stores.yahoo.net/
bigjarofwasps Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 1961 URUGUAY SILVER $10 PESOSI am sure that the story behind the 1961 SILVER URUGUAY 1O PESOS with over 5000 coins in the WTC vault is going to be one of the strangest story told, and I wish I could be the one to tell that story but I just don?t have all the detail yet on it. So picture this, why would anybody put 5000 pcs of a 10 pesos from Uruguay into a vault under the world trade center ? Is there any good explanation for that ? It just does not make any sense. On its own without being under the world trade center in a vault would this be considered a valuable coin? Well I check that out and right now Non WTC this coin sells for $13.50 Buy It Now. So I guess not a valuable coin if it does not come from the WTC Vault. So what where 5000 of these coins doing there ? Did one individual have all those coins sitting there for a reason was it at the time a cheap way to buy Silver to hedge that the silver price would go up? Maybe but I don?t know, or is there something else that is at play here. No matter what it is the circumstances about this coin and how it ended up under the world trade center will make for a great story some day and for right now I think this coin is very interesting and I would love to hear the full story
bigjarofwasps Posted June 19, 2010 Author Posted June 19, 2010 Very strange story indeed. Found this thread by searching the forum, to my surprise. I haven't seen ANYTHING about this in the local news media, nor i think they even mentioned it!! Very strange. I must say I am inclined to agree with you here. The only thing I will say in this stories defence, is that the company that graded & slabbed them, surely they wouldn`t put there name to something that was in any way dodgey, one would assume that this could do irreparable damage to their reputation.
