    Yup. Johann Pieper was a Naval Hospital Orderly. Which makes award of the War Effort Cross-- specifically for NON Red Cross related war services, a real typical :banger: . Basically, if he'd had any rank, he'd have gotten a "white black" EK2. What he SHOULD have gotten was a Red Cross Medal.

    Signed by Marine Oberstabsarzt Dr. Max Auer (b. 1874), who had been regimental surgeon of the 3rd Naval Infantry Regiment until April 1917, when he took over as Chief Physician of Fortress Hospital Friedrichsort until war's end.
