I believe the suggestion of Daniel and Uwe, he indeed was a General der but we did not know, because of a lack of publication, is the best explanation.

After looking at this portrait lots of time I now recognized, Onkel Feldmann was going to the fotographer with a kaputt Crownorder

As we know from orders with swords on the orderbar, they often loose parts of the swords. That seems to happend to his neck cross too.
