no, focus too fuzzy to read:

But at least neatly labelled on back

Alex Bayerlein was born 22 November 1858 in Amorbach, Unterfranken, and served in the bavarian army 1879-82 "in M?nchen."

But then... he moved away from there.

Anyone want to guess where Alex had his photo taken?

Very likely bought from the same fraternal organizations outfitters who made G.A.R. uniforms.

Herr... or rather MISTER Bayerlein lived in

From the late Tony Colson's collection.

In sleuthing-this gentleman is a member of the Deutscher Krieger Bund. The Deutscher KriegVerein (est. 1874) included Franco Prussian war vets. The former did not.

Ah-- a precursor of the American Legion versus Veterans of Foreign Wars organizational divide for American veterans.

Rick, that is a wonderful photo. First I have seen with a Bavarian veteran wearing his badge. Nice to see some of the items I collect being worn. Not to change the thread, but ran across these Wurttemburg veterans wearing, among other things, their Wurttemburg Kreigerbund badges. Thought I would share it will all interested. Mike

    Rick,

I am very interested in this group of Wurttemburg War Veterans as my gg gradfather was a member of the Deutscher Kriegerverein in NY (Brookly, I believe but maybe Albany, New York) in the late 1800's/early 1900's. He was John Buechs, born 1850, died March 16, 1907. He was also a member (I think) of the Bayerischer Volksfestverein in the same location. All I know of his origin is that he was German but I'm not sure where exactly. I believe he was from Bavaria and immigrated around 1868. If there is any information that you might have or a website that I might search to look for him, I would appreciate the help.

    Many thanks,

    Heather (Buechs) Leger
