Eric Stahlhut Posted July 4, 2008 Author Posted July 4, 2008 (edited) notice how the pin has been detached and knurled a bit, tip seems to have been sharpened Edited July 4, 2008 by Eric Stahlhut
Eric Stahlhut Posted July 4, 2008 Author Posted July 4, 2008 by now you have noticed the markings on the back-- but if you hold it in your hand and glance at it, it's almost impossible to see the etchings. it was kinda tough to get the right angle/light for them to come out decently:
Eric Stahlhut Posted July 4, 2008 Author Posted July 4, 2008 as far as i can tell, it reads: ' festung verdun 1916 alois horwitz'all in all a cross with lots of character...
Richard Gordon Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 EricI've seen a lot of this style of EK1 on ebay, almost a frequently as KO examples. Still haven't added one to the collection though!Your's certainly has been in the wars!!Rich
Motorhead Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Hmm....for me this piece is from the 20/30ies! Typical "Deumer" core (remember the clamshell EKs)-so if the "engraving" was done by the original owner I think that happened after 1918! Micha
Eric Stahlhut Posted August 27, 2008 Author Posted August 27, 2008 (edited) do you mean that deumer (known primarily among collectors circles for their work during the 3rd reich) was established in the 20/30s? or were they around earlier, then expanded their production and/or bought out smaller concerns?does anyone have the means to establish when this firm was founded?clamshells are a pure post-ww1 idea. but what about before? Eric Stahlhut Posted August 30, 2008 Author Posted August 30, 2008 i noticed the W on the cross in question is smaller than on my screwback deumer. it is 6mm--the clamshell measures in at 7mm.
