norwest78
This photo I recently got has a Luftwaffe ace in the shot: Hermann Graf, one of only 27 people to be awarded the Knight's Cross with oaks, swords, and diamonds. He is credited with 212 air victories.
norwest78
Zoomed in. Notice his pilot badge is above the EKI. He must have been very proud of his piloting!
norwest78
Photo from the internet for reference. Both pictures must have been taken in roughly the same time period.
W McSwiggan
Christopher Ailsby indicates that Graf won the Golden Pilot-Observer Badge with Diamonds. Frankly this is the only reference I've seen that makes this claim but if true, that would explain the position of the badge vs. the EKI. Many photos of Galland and others show this positioning for that badge.Zoomed in. Notice his pilot badge is above the EKI. He must have been very proud of his piloting!
