heusy68 Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 (edited) Hello Gentlemen, I was recently in a small tour in Indonesia. I went to Surakarta where there is a small antique market (the Tri Windu). It's very near the Mangkunegaran Palace. I bought this Cross from the time of Pakubwono X. Usually this cross is found in dark light metal. This one had been gilded (I mean real gold gilded). Usually these crosses like most of the Surakarta awards is found in 3 size, but the larger one : 36 millimeters is hard to get. I will let our friend Windu explain much better than I could do what this award is,and translate. For those who will travel till there, there is Orders & Medals on display in the Mangkunegaran, from Netherlands of course, but also from Annam,Cambodia,China,Laos,Thailand. heusy68 Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 Usually these crosses looks like this (dark light metal). Here is a small size cross. Emmanuel
heusy68 Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 (edited) In the Tri Windu Market I also get this medal from Pakubwono XII with reverse date 1876-1926. I guess it's not our calendar,as pakubwono XII passed away in 2004. Maybe,as there is a 50 on reverse it's a Golden Jubilee Medal (Pakubwono XII reigned 59 years from 1945 till 2004). The medal is made of silver and diameter is 30 millimeters. If our friend Windu can help us,he's most welcome. Emmanuel Edited April 20, 2012 by heusy68
heusy68 Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 This is a photo of Pakubwono XII. What is the breast badge he's wearing ? In Jakarta Antique Market Street I found this breast badge that is unknown to me. Could it be the same ? Could our friend Windu explain what this breast badge is ? The inscription reads : ANGKATAN 45. Could it be a commemorative award for 45 years of Independence ? The badge is 43 millimeters and is made of light gilded metal. It's a breast badge from the Republic of Indonesia, but I have no data concerning it. I have included it in this topic, just because it seems Pakubwono XII is wearing it. Emmanuel
heusy68 Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 Hello Gentlemen, here is a group of Surakarta ODM now for sale in Jakarta. The large size miss the Order of Loyalty, and on the small side there is the Gusti Raden Medal. Emmanuel
James Hoard Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 Hello Gentlemen, here is a group of Surakarta ODM now for sale in Jakarta. The large size miss the Order of Loyalty, and on the small side there is the Gusti Raden Medal. Emmanuel Dear Emmanuel Many thanks for posting these. They are both very useful for confirming the order of precedence between the decorations. I do not know what has happened to my earlier post, but I had stated that the earlier decoration you posted was indeed the Golden Jubilee Medal of PB XII. The dates are according to the Javanese calendar. He acceded on 20th Jamadilakir 1876 JE (or 1st April 1945 AD) and celebrated his fiftieth anniversary on 20th Jamadilakir 1926 JE (or 5th December 1993 AD). PBXII received the following orders and decorations: - Bintang Satya Lencara Pahlawan Gerilya (28.10.1995) - Bintang Dharma Jaya - Bintang Satya Lencana Perang Kemerdekaan I - Bintang Satya Lencana Perang Kemerdekaan II - KGC of the Order of Orange-Nassau of the Netherlands (21.8.1995) - DK of Negri Sembilan (20.7.2001) Hope this helps. Cheers, James
kapten_windu Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Hi, -that gold gilded loyalty cross from Kasunanan palace maybe for high class officer/priyayi/royal family. i don't have much information about this, there is also possibility that the recipient gilded it so it appears more "bling-bling".. Emmanuel, can you post larger observe picture of the cross so i can read the inscription clearly? -Some information regarding Angkatan 45 star: this star considered a commemoration of independence war 1945-1949, issued in late 90's, all living recipient of Bintang Gerilya can have this medal.. SISKS Pakubuwono XII also have this star as a supplement for his gerilya star..

heusy68 Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 Hello Gentlemen, some 3 days ago, someone send me that picture from Jakarta. But I don't know what it is. Clearly it's Surakarta Sultanate with Cypher of Pakubuono X. But I don't even have a clear idea how big this badge is ? If Windu,or anyone else can help,he's most welcome. Emmanuel

Once again a very interesting posting from you. Purely my speculation but could this be the Bintang Sri Nugraha (The Star of Honour)? I have never seen the actual decoration myself or come across even an illustration. However, going by its history and the appearance of two pujung between the arms of the star, I suspect this may be it. Instituted by Susuhanan Prabhu Sri Paku Buwana X 16th September 1904 in substitution for the award of the Pujung Sri Nugraha (Umbrella of Honour) to two Dutch citizens on 8th April 1900 after the Dutch authorities objected to the “insult” of such an award to white Europeans. The decoration was conferred in five classes: - 1. First Class or Bintang Sri Nugraha Pangkat I, - 2. Second Class or Bintang Sri Nugraha Pangkat II, - 3. Third Class or Bintang Sri Nugraha Pangkat III, - 4. Fourth Class in bronze or Medali Sri Nugraha Pangkat IV, - 5. Fourth Class in copper or Medali Sri Nugraha Pangkat V. U sually reserved for kraton officials and state servants. According to the regulations of 8th August 1907, recipients of the first three classes were entitled to state umbrellas. My further guess would be that your example is either the first or second class. Cheers, James
kapten_windu Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 (edited) Well Emmanuel, James had a good point, however i spotted differences in the inscription, and that's make me confuse, see the pictures below: See the inscription: above: both are same: Pakubuwana the center: indicates the class (1st picture: 3rd class, 2nd picture:4th class) below: the mystery star stated: Sri-?-?-ya, and the other one stated clearly Sri Nugraha My opinion: It's possibly the Sri Nugraha Star but the maker is not good enough in the inscription process (the maker probably not from local here).. James Hoard Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Thank you JDM for these very interesting posts on the Indonesian Sultanates. However, do you have any actual contemporary references or sources for them? The more recent crop of Surakarta orders, as you know, are the result of a Malaysian money making exercise. Scanty information on old orders was loosely grafted on to modern creations of a very Malaysian style, titles, etc. Often with little or no relation to the real decorations. Recipients purchase their decorations for a fee, though somehow the former prince was induced to preside over the investitures. Probably also for a fee to lend some loose credibility to a dirty business. I fear that these decorations for Pontianak, Sambas, etc, may be of the same calibre. Cheers, James
