The Chin'g armies wore the Manchu cap for centuries and the Mandarin's dragon emblems would denote his "rank" (Oh, where is that Antique Collectors' magazine article?)...as you know.A number of other European officers who were with Gordon in the Ever Victorious Army stayed on in Imperial China right through the Boxer war.
