    Hello,

    I need some help to translate the inscription on the obverse of this Russian medal from the Russian-Japanese War.

    In addition, would like to know what is the meaning of this "eye in the triangle", if possible.

    Thanks in advance,

    Douglas.

    Obverse on this medal is the triangle with the eye.

    Reverse text means: "May God Resurrect You When Time Comes". There is funny legend about this moto. Story tells that the officials, after medal was desined already in Russo-Japanese war time, showed the picture on it to the Tsar. He was looking it and write to the paper "when time comes".... what means that medal must be produced and awarded when the war is over - when time comes. But probably not the brigthest guys thought that tsar wants to add it to reverse text and so it went.

    Three types of the medal were issued, all of the same design:

    Silver - for the defenders of Port-Arthur, irrespective of their ranks;

    Light bronze - for all military personnel that had taken part in ground or sea battle;

    Dark bronze - for all military and some civil personnel that were stationed at the Far East and along the Trans-Siberian Railway, as well as for those who had contributed to military efforts in various ways.

    The All seeing eye is a freemason symbol.

    also used on US currency today.

    The Imperial russian used this symbol on several medals.

    In this case the image is the "All seeing eye" of God.

    Timo,

    Do you have a source for this information on this medal?

    My friend is looking for some good books on this subject.

    Thanks in advance,

    Douglas.

    I think the thread on "Reference Books you should have" are excellent books. (see above in the Thread index) There are two or three other books, but these publications are what your friend will like.
