John R Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Does anybody have a photo of the Blockade Runner TANNENFELS?Thanks, John
Guest Rick Research Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 Only this data from G?nther Steinweg's 1954 "Die Deutsche Handelsflotte im Zweiten Weltkrieg: Aufgaben und Schicksal"--Deutsche Dampfschiffahrts Gesellschaft Hansa (Bremen) ship "Tannenfels: launched 1938, 7,840 BRT. Scuttled and sunk in the Gironde 25.08.44. Blockade breaker to East Asia.
Guest Rick Research Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008  Don't keep us in suspense-- what have you got?
John R Posted November 21, 2008 Author Posted November 21, 2008 (edited) This photo is of crewmembers, or some of the crewmembers, of Stier. I do not know if the ship behind is the one that rescued them, Tannefels, Stier, or another vessel. I have tried to compare the side of the ship behind the group to both Stier and Tannenfels, and I can't really make a connection. Maybe Tannenfels after a lot of modifications. John R Posted November 21, 2008 Author Posted November 21, 2008 This is the last photo taken of Stier.
John R Posted November 21, 2008 Author Posted November 21, 2008 I would note that the group of officers are about the right number for the survivors of Stier. The Doctor was killed in the action with the US Liberty Ship which sank her though. John
John R Posted November 21, 2008 Author Posted November 21, 2008 WWI stern gun from Hopkins sinking Stier. It was the maiden voyage for Hopkins and the German crew insisted that it was an auxiliary cruiser only finding out when they returned to Germany that it was just a Liberty Ship. John
John R Posted November 21, 2008 Author Posted November 21, 2008 (edited) This is the Captain of Stier, I am not sure we can see him in the photo though. Based on the decorations in the photos, the one I circled might be him. Opinions?John Edited November 21, 2008 by John Robinson
Martin W Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 (edited) Johni am convinced that the group shot was not taken in front of the Stier before her departure.I think it was taken after her return to Bordeaux.I am not sure what ship the picture was taken in front of but it could well be the Tannenfels after modifications. This is the area i have concentrated on in comparing the group shot. The vertical piers stemming from the main deck seem to coincide. They are not a feature on the Steir.Regards,Martin.
