Colonial Medals Question

I just received a bar with the SW Africa medal and China medal, both of which have the smaller ribbon suspension ring "fixed" to the medal, instead of loose, which is what I usually find. Can anyone tell me whether this is a variant, or whether all these medals had the two rings "floating" instead of fixed?

Sorry, I can't post pictures on this site, but it is a bar posted here before, with an odd combination of foreign decorations, including a Beligian Civil award and a Spanish Order of Isabella. I recently got this bar from another member, Noor.
