A couple of flight bars & some odds

    Recommended Posts

Fighter. I am not sure about the grade of this one. According to the colour of the pin it should be a gold.

However after a spray of WD40 it looks more like a bronze,

Anybody any idea if the rest of this makers bars have a similar feature.

    Oh yes, its by R.S. & S.

    Before cleaning.

    Very nice pieces!

The pin is a great indicator of the class of award when the finish is faded on zinc clasps, as the pins are made from an entirely different, non-absorbtive, metal.

Like the pendants, too! If you ever want to get rid of any of the pendants, please let me know.

Yes, Harrier, I know about the pin colour but the clasp is very brown in hand.

The only other explanation I can of think is that the coating used by R.S. & S. turns brown over time

instead of fading away to silver or zinc as on all the other late war clasps that I have seen.

I was wondering if anyone else had silver clasp, or definite bronze clasp, by the same maker, with a gilt pin?

    Regards,

    Pete

Errr not at the moment these (and a 1200) are the only unmounted pendants I have.

I have a silver Bomber by F&BL which I would have sworn was a bronze, but for the pin. I think you may be on to something that some manufacturers used a finish which faded to brown, rather than to gray.

Ah, thats interesting, I havn't got an example by that maker.

I have two other R.S. & S. bars, but both with needle pins.

This one is a definite bronze but I will check the pin colours.

And do a better scan! I'm pretty sure its not a grey colour.
