misiu Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 Hi collector-friends, enclosed you will find some pics of a German medal bar with colonial and Finnish medals. Unfortunately the seller could not tell me the origin of this bar. Is it possible to track the owner? I think a person awarded finnish medals as well as colonial medals is not so difficult to track, or? For a help or hint I would be very thankful. Greetings to all German and Finnish medal bar collectors. Misiu
Ulsterman Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 I have a hard time believing that career was/is possible.
misiu Posted November 7, 2009 Author Posted November 7, 2009 The following medals can be seen on the bar (in German) Iron Cross 2nd class 1914 Hindenburg Cross Preußen Dienstauszeichnung 2.Klasse nach 12 Dienstjahren Kolonial Denkmünze für Weiße mit Gefechtsspange "Venezuela 1902/03" Orden für Verdienste um die Kolonien Finnish Liberty Cross, 3rd class, 1918 Finnish Freedom Medal To answer the last post: "Venezuela 1902/03"
misiu Posted November 7, 2009 Author Posted November 7, 2009 Why would be such an career impossible? Born around 1875, attending mission in Venezuela 1902, coming back to Germany, fighting in WW1 and attending Baltic division in 1917/1918...
Guest Rick Research Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 (edited) Yes, you have-- as the bar's awards show-- a FORMER Petty Officer: 1)Venezuela 1902/03 from the international naval blockade 2)the XII Years Medal indicates that service was NOT continuous from then or there would be an XXV with double overseas and wartime duty recalled for the Great War. Unfortunately a)he would have been probably an ordinary sailor in 1902 and b) there is no published list of the 1918 Cross of Liberty recipients. If the Cross of Liberty list to Germans ever WAS available, while a number of "suspects" at approximate level of a Deck Officer might make a Short List, there would be no way without that man's Militärpaß to find out if he had been off the Venezuelan coast in 1902. I am afraid you will have to settle for Very Rare And Desirable rather than a name. Edited November 8, 2009 by Rick Research
misiu Posted November 11, 2009 Author Posted November 11, 2009 Thanks Rick for your post and the fact that such a career was possible. By the way - I would like to get into contact with German and Finnish medal bar collectors...
