rusticalex Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Hi...I'm very new to militaria, but I have a nice little collection via my family, so will be calling on your knowledge a fair bit! This badge is just over 6 inches by just over 4 inches - please can you shed light on the regiment, age, where it would have been worn, and whether it has any value? Thank you.
leigh kitchen Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Just off the top of my head - some British & East India Company regiments were awarded the battle honour "Assaye" for the battle of 1803, the obvious one from a Brtish point of view beng the 74th, later Highland Lght Infantry, whch kept the elephant & "Assaye" scroll as part of it's badge until amalgamated wth the Royal Scots Fusilers in the 1950's. The initial "M" probaly indicates one of the Madras units involved?
Michael Johnson Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 Madras Light Cavalry? It certainly looks like a Light Dragoon pattern.
Ulsterman Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 Definitely a shako plate. I think its a bell top shako plate (@ 1830-1840s), but the back looks new-esp. with the screws in place. My guess is 3rd Madras cavalry.
leigh kitchen Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 That fits does'nt it - Light Dragoon style "cross". was wondering about the 19th LD, but the "M" ndcated a Madras unit.
