Chris Boonzaier Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Signed at X-Mas 1914... it cannot be the WW2 KC winner... he is too old...
Guest Rick Research Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Dragoons collar. dR/dL cockade-- since he's got a regimental cipher on his boards, must be dR.
Mike Dwyer Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 (edited) Chris, The 1914 Rangliste has a Rittmeister dR Freiherr von Lüttwitz listed in Grenadier-zu-Pferd-Regiment Freiherr von Derfflinger (Neumärkisches) Nr.3. It's hard to tell, but I think that's the right cypher on his shoulderboard. Edited January 22, 2010 by Mike Dwyer
Guest Rick Research Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 (edited) But he appears to be a Leutnant-- the super-sized cipher shows no sign of pips above or below. So: a late 1914 commission??? Not a wartime fatality. Not on any of our award rolls. Edited January 22, 2010 by Rick Research
Glenn J Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 But he appears to be a Leutnant-- the super-sized cipher shows no sign of pips above or below. So: a late 1914 commission??? Not a wartime fatality. Not on any of our award rolls. Trouble is; there were no late 1914 reserve commissions to any Freiherren v. Lüttwitz in the cavalry. There were actually two Rittmeister der Reserve Frhr. v. Lüttwitz in Grenadier-zu-Pferd-Regiment Freiherr von Derfflinger (Neumärkisches) Nr.3 in 1914 : The brothers Rochus and Ernst. Although the shoulder board is not clear, I think it must be one of these two. Regards Glenn
Chip Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 This type of thick insignia, though not limited to, is more typical of cavalry ciphers/crowns. Chip
