Note the way the ring is soldered slightly off centre of the blob on the reverse of this one.

Was this common or did this one slip through quality control?

Here are my 3 favourite Imperial EK2's...Wilm top left, LV top right(looks different to yours though Tony??) and CD 800 at the bottom.

....and this is my very first TR EK2 that I have had since 1984 or '85 can't remember exactly.I bought Gordon's book The Iron Cross a History 1813 -1957 and I just had to get an EK2,and now I have a few!

I think this cross is a frosty one under all of that patina.

I too love the S&L's. Your cased example is the first I've seen, and certainly one of the finest looking EKII's I've seen.

I don't have those brown pieces of paper though Jim.

I found my 2 100s in the cellar. They had been given to my wife's grandad in Oct. 44 (I have the paperwork too) to be awarded to soldiers not expected to survive their wounds.

I think one of them was awarded several times as the ribbon has a safety pin and is folded the way they probably would have been when put through the button hole.

Those are keepers. It's rare to know where these EKII's come from, and the story behind them is great.

The brown paper is tissue paper. The new cross was wrapped in this tissue before being placed in the envelope. It protected the finish on the cross as they would slide around in the envelope.

I try to collect crosses and packets that are original to one another. I have been fortunate in that so far I have also gotten the original tissue with each one.

However, if a cross and packet came along that were matched and maker marked, I wouldn't turn it down.
