Skull Badge .......... British Rifle League

    Recommended Posts

    Picked this up today.

Obviously based on the badge of the 17th Lancers.

There's not much on the Internet about The British Rifle League ............... the undernoted extract about sums it up.

The National Smallbore Rifle Association, The NSRA, is the national governing body for all Small-bore Rifle and Pistol Target Shooting in the United Kingdom, including Airgun and Match Crossbow Shooting.

Originally formed in 1901 as the Society of Working Mens Rifle Clubs (SWMRC) with national hero Earl Roberts of Kandahar as its first President, it was created to promote the formation of civilian rifle clubs throughout the country. The SWMRC amalgamated with the British Rifle League in 1903 to become the Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs. The SMRC then changed its name in 1947 to become the National Smallbore Rifle Association (NSRA).

So, it seems that the badge dates to 1903, or earlier.

Does anyone here have any further information on The British Rifle League ???? :jumping:

    A bit more ..............

Seems like this could be a rare badge.

Funnily enough, there's a reference there to 'Viscount Colville of Culross.'

This was his ancestral shack, painted c.1870........

    What a coincidence! :jumping:

Maybe this badge has 'come home' at last, after over 100 years.

Congratulations on an excellent and rare find. I have never seen anything like this before and having read the internet sources you provided can see no real links to the badge of the 17th Lancers. (unless I missed something)

    Intriguing!!!
