JapanX Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 Cool docs mate! Thanks! And again all lions are lying... Maybe Mitya will help us with translation? Regards, Nick
Markus Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 This is a Turkish Firman order document with medal found on a Turkish web site. The Turkish documents look even more stunning! This one also has a German translation written below the script. Circa 1916. http://www.turkish-m...humbNailsTR.htm 1
JapanX Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 Agree... But please don't forget that we are in love with lion and sun order
Mitya Ivanov Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 "Maybe Mitya will help us with translation" Nick my pal! I don't read neither Persian nor Arab or Pashto etc.etc. And my English is also bad - as you know.
drclaw Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 What an interesting thread! Thanks gents and especially Nick for posting these examples. Now a silly question. Having only studied 6 weeks of Arabic, are these written in Arabic or Persian? I ask because most of the documentation for Ottoman Empire orders is written in phonetic Arabic script but actually reads as Turkish.

As for Markus beauties I'll wait for Babar opinion ;)
Markus Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 From what I have read on blog sites Persians can read the Ottoman orders and there isn't much difference between the two scripts.
drclaw Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I had a Saudi friend look at some Ottoman awarding documents for me. He could phonetically read the script (Arabic) but the "sounds" made no sense to him as it was Turkish although there were some common words. It took awhile for my mind to grasp, but it was no different to a French person reading a text in German. Unless he was also fluent in German, being able to read the text doesn't necessarily mean understanding the meaning of the words.

Hey Gavin, I ran this issue past Babar and he agrees with your assessment. The same alphabet is used and it can be read, but it makes no sense to him unless he also knows Turkish language.
