JapanX Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 Sometimes collector of Imperial Russia medals could meet strange looking Nicolay II medals for Zeal. “Strange” they are looking in comparison with officially minted medals (known in Russia as “госник” or “госчекан”). Here we have a nice example of such medal (please note that this discussion will be dovoted to medals with dimeter 28-30 mm ). Obverse
JapanX Posted June 18, 2012 Author Posted June 18, 2012 (edited) Back to these "strange looking medals”. The list of their strangeness’s include 1) unusual figured print on perimeter of obverse 2) unusual form of ring 3) medal made in white metal or copper alloy or “the devil alone only knows this alloy” 4) strange (sometimes strikingly dissimilar) portrait of Nicolay II 5) strange form of inscription and branch details on reverse Usually these strange specimens were made in private workshops during the reign of Nicolay II (many of them in the last few years of his reign). Let’s take a close look at these medals Edited June 18, 2012 by JapanX
