GC*
Dear fellow collectors, I am a collector of Soviet and Warsaw Pact nations hat badges. However, I started since few time to broaden my horizons and I approached those Arba states which experimented Arab Socialism and various forms of "marxist government". So here we are. These are my first eagles. I am particularly proud of the two Libyan ones. I would have some questions. First, regarding the Libyan, Egyptian and South Yemenese ones, could somebody tell me in which period and in which corp (military? police?) they were used? Then we come to the littler ones, to the stars-with-eagles and to the unknown rank. First, are they iraqi? Again, period/corp? And are they hat badges or collar/uniform pins? Same for the other badges under the three eagles. Thanks for your help Best, GC
Lion101
The green shield eagles are Libyan for their army. The smaller eagles that are in the stars are Syria for the shoulder boards. I want to say the Syrian badges are gold = officer and silver = NCO/ Enlisted but I am not sure. However I know that these stars are used by both the army and navy and they are still being used currently. GC*
Thank you very much Lion for your answer! I am still undecided about the three little eagles on the right of my photo.. The three stars suggest me that they are Iraqui, but normally Iraqui eagles have the head turned to the left. Still not sure. And I still don't have any idea about the badge down on the right.. Any opinions?
peter monahan
GC This could turn into a very useful project! 'Unknown' eagles turn up on this and many other forums on a very regular basis and many in fact turn out to be from the Middle East, so a comprehensive listing of them, if it eventually develops into that, would be a great service to collectors everywhere! bmsm
GC, Would you please post a better picture of the badge in the lower right corner. I believe it is a beret or visor badge for the Iraqi Police but it is hard to be sure from the picture. Bob
Lion101
Oh I made an error. You don't have two Libyan badges but you have four. The ones above the green shield ones are from the Libyan Arab Republic model. They stop wearing the red, white, and black type in 1977. Also your green shield ones are later period ones from the late 1980s and 1990s. The ones from the late 1970s and early 1980s used the Libyan Arab Republic model but just painted over the shield. I hope this helps.
GC*
Gentlemen, thanks to you all for your comments! Peter Monahan, you are definitely right. This topic itself is the proof that a database of arab eagles is definitely needed. The amount of different versions and the stunning similarity between some of them (at least to my inexperienced eyes) make them very interesting, but at the same time their cataloguing quite difficult.. Bmsm, unfortunately I will be able to take better pictures of these badges only in mid December, but I will very happy to provide a better pic of that badge asap! Lion101, your comment is once more very helpful! Your comment definitely helps! The red-white-black eagles have the shield made of very good quality material and the shield itself looks like a separated piece then fixed on the main structure..at the same time the design and quality of the green shield eagles looks poor in comparison to the other eagles.. That's quite interesting!
bmsm
GC, This is how the right and left facing eagle were worn on a set of Iraqi Shoulderboards. Bob
GC*
Thank you bmsm, now we know where those little eagles came from! As soon as possible I will be posting a bigger pic of what you said could be a iraqui police badge!
2xvetran
As Bob said, the bottom right looks like an Iraqi police badge for a beret. Scott.

That's quite interesting! The green shield ones maybe made in Libya or another part of the Middle East or North Africa. I want to say maybe in the late 1980s or 1990s. The red-white-black could be British or maybe even soviet made since they are of high quality.
