Irish Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 On a Canadian Queens Korea Medal what would the prefix SK stand for. this would appear before the serial number. I have been told that S is for an NCO. The next letter was place of enlistment? The Letter K would stand for what location. Many thanks
TacHel Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 My money would be on SK = Saskatchewan Can we see the compete inscription?
Irish Posted July 25, 2012 Author Posted July 25, 2012 (edited) The inscription appears on both the Queens Canadian Korea Medal and the U.N. Medal. SK-13816 L.J. Browne. There is also a Canadian Korea volunteer medal that has no rim inscription. thanks for any help on this as Canadian items do not show up much here in Central Illinois Edited July 25, 2012 by Irish
QSAMIKE Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 The inscription appears on both the Queens Canadian Korea Medal and the U.N. Medal. SK-13816 L.J. Browne. There is also a Canadian Korea volunteer medal that has no rim inscription. thanks for any help on this as Canadian items do not show up much here in Central Illinois Hello Irish....... Browne's regimental number during World War Two was K-13816, he volunteered to serve in Korea and given his old number with the letter "S" in front....... The K stands for the Military District, I'm not sure which one is K that he enlisted in during WW2..... I know Calgary where I am was Military District 13 and letter "M"..... Mike
Irish Posted July 26, 2012 Author Posted July 26, 2012 Thank you Mike, So he was a 2 war veteran. That would explain the WW2 rack of medals that were with this group in the shop where these were found.. None of the WW2 medals were named so I left them behind. I will continue to try and determine what the K represents. Any way to research this veteran's service? Thanks again

QSAMIKE Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Irish...... I would go back and buy those WW2 medals to complete the set...... Mike
Irish Posted July 26, 2012 Author Posted July 26, 2012 Mike, many thanks. that is very helpful. Your efforts on behalf of this thread are quite commendable. I have just doubled my knowledge of Canadian Medals. Best John I will go back and get the other medals
Irish Posted July 26, 2012 Author Posted July 26, 2012 (edited) As I start to compare numbers and prefixes their looks to be a difference in unit and location. K which the medal in question has would denote B.C and Yukon Terr, District # 11. The serial number of 13816 would denote Regiment de la Chaudiere 9001 - 14000. Which is located in Militia District 5 - Prefix E - Eastern Quebec and Western Newfoundland. Assuming this serial number was his WW2 issue. Am I looking at this in to precise of an interpretation?? Could there be differences like this??. I am assuming that the block of serial numbers would be unique and allocated only once to one unit? However I just noticed that this serial number could have been repeated in the Royal Canadian Regiment 12001 - 20000 which had a prefix of Permanent Force Joining the CASF - Prefix P. Different prefix letter though Thanks Edited July 26, 2012 by Irish

Please note that this is a heavily edited list, only showing some of the major armoured units and infantry regiments. In reply to your..... I am assuming that the block of serial numbers would be unique and allocated only once to one unit? No that is not the case...... For example: In Militia District 1 - Prefix A - Toronto area 1st Hussars (6th Armoured Regiment) 1 - 1999 so all numbers between 1 and 1999 would start withe the letter A In Militia District 7 - Prefix G - New Brunswick 5th Armoured Regiment 1 - 3000 so all numbers between 1 and 3000 would start withe the letter G So there could be different numbers 1001, and A 1001 and a G 1001 .... etc...... The numbers shown are only for MAJOR units, not including Engineers, Artillery etc...... He would not have been a member of Regiment de la Chaudiere..... Sorry John using your logic he could have been in 6 different units...... Not including Non-Armoured or Infantry Regiments...... Mike Edited July 26, 2012 by QSAMIKE
Irish Posted July 26, 2012 Author Posted July 26, 2012 6 different units, That would have made him one heck of a fighting man. yes that was a poor assumption on my part, thanks for the clarification. As with much research into military records etc there are usuually no quick and or sure answers. Even though I tried. Much appreciated.
Georg14 Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Good evening, Gentlemen. Sorry, maybe I'm confused in the definitions, but did not fully understand transcript SC 2205 J.B.R. CARON : "I have been told that S is for an NCO" (#1) – what means an NCO ? SC - the letter "S" was set as whole after WW2 or this is an addition for his code during WW2 ? The letter "C" refers to the M3, but there is no regiment 2205 ( "Militia District 3 - Prefix C - Eastern Ontario and South-Western Quebec. Hastings & Prince Edward Regiment 4001 - 9000 ...", but 2205 ?). Many thanks. 1
QSAMIKE Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 (edited) Good evening, Gentlemen. Sorry, maybe I'm confused in the definitions, but did not fully understand transcript SC 2205 J.B.R. CARON : CARON IS A W.W.2 SOLDIER THAT HAS VOLUNTEERED FOR SERVICE DURING THE KOREAN WAR THAT IS WHY HE HAS THE LETTER "S" BEFORE HIS NUMBER "I have been told that S is for an NCO" (#1) – what means an NCO ? THE LETTER "S" DOES NOT MEAN NCO, NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICER..... VERY VERY OLD WIVES TALE SC - the letter "S" was set as whole after WW2 or this is an addition for his code during WW2 ? THIS DESIGNATION WAS NOT USED DURING WW2, ONLY KOREA The letter "C" refers to the M3, but there is no regiment 2205 ( "Militia District 3 - Prefix C - Eastern Ontario and South-Western Quebec. Hastings & Prince Edward Regiment 4001 - 9000 ...", but 2205 ?). Many thanks. YES THE LETTER "C" IS FOR MILITIA DISTRICT 3, BUT YOU WILL ALSO NOTE I HAVE STATED THAT THE LIST IS VERY HEAVILY EDITED AND NOT ALL UNITS ARE SHOWN JUST SOME OF THE MAJOR ONES. Michael Johnson Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 C2205 falls within 3rd Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, (Active Service) Michael
Georg14 Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Thank You very much ! All the best in this New Year! Regards.
Georg14 Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 "The letter "C" refers to the M3, but there is no regiment 2205..." The same problem with SL 11898 ...
Michael Johnson Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 (edited) C2205 falls within 3rd Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, (Active Service) They were alloted C2001 to C3000 - 2205 is his individual number. L11898 is in the block for the 21st Field Battery Royal Canadian Artillery, again an Active (i.e. overseas) unit. When he re-enlisted for Korea, and S was added, but he did not necessarily serve in his wartime unit. You would need to have his service papers. I suspect he was a very late enlistment and may not have qualified for more than a War Medal. Michael Edited January 10, 2017 by Michael Johnson
QSAMIKE Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Hi Michael...... I have a funny feeling that our friend Georg may think that the numbers are unit numbers not numbers given to individual soldiers..... If he wants all of the lists he will have tp purchase "Clive Law's Regimental Numbers of the Canadian Army, 1936-1960" book...... All I can say is thank God I collect Boer War, a lot less confusing...... Mike
Georg14 Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 " Georg may think that the numbers are unit numbers not numbers given to individual soldiers..... " I understood that this is blocks of the personal numbers whithin each Militia Districts and assigned certain unit/regiment. I am wrong ?
Michael Johnson Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 That is correct. The size of the block could vary widely. As has been said "Regimental Numbers of the Canadian Army" by Clive M. Law is the best source. Michael
