    These one have been always interested me...

    Any ideas for what occasions they were used and (for that matter) how they were wore?

    Here they come.

    It is belived that this piece was made somewhere around 1870

    This one belonged to John George Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham. Made in St. Petersburg by Wilhelm Kämmerer in 1838.

    Length of collar (including clasp) 173mm (!!!)

    Belonged to Duke William of Brunswick (1830-1884)

    IMHO, such a small representation might've been worn on the chest or sticking out of the boutonnière by a non Russian who probably had Orders from his own country that had precedence.

    Sold by Morton&Eden in May 2012 for 18 000 pounds ;)

    The Grand Duke of Baden Collection, Hermann Historica, 20/10/2000 lot 12, 10 link chain with badge, 25 x 14.5mm, wt. 12g, estimate 12,000 DM sold for the same.

    Those were the days my firend to missquote Mary Hopkin.
