Herman Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Is this one real? Named to James W. Davis. Anyone an idea? Herman
dmiller8 Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 (edited) Somehow, it appears faked. The plating is coming off the medal, revealing something looking like cheap "war metal" underneath. Also, the lettering is not consistent, as if it was done by hand. Contrast this with the Purple Heart medals illustrated at http://scottspurpleh....com/index.html. None of these medals, some which date back to 1932, show the loss of plating or inconsistent lettering seen in this illustration. Edited August 24, 2012 by dmiller8
scottplen Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 I have seen this one before ? Not sure where ? It looks almost like a practice engraving? Look at the A and the D very shakey? I its not goverment engraved could be a Wounded in action vet who had it done after the war ?
Herman Posted August 26, 2012 Author Posted August 26, 2012 It was offered on the Belgian (french speaking) e-bay site and ended a few days ago with no bids. Startamount Eur 89,95. I indeed think it was offered before.. Perhaps even discussed before on a internetforum. The picture i added was allready on the net.
Herman Posted August 26, 2012 Author Posted August 26, 2012 Oops, pressed post to soon. The inscription is not official and if you google James you find several candidates. Herman V
dmiller8 Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Was there an image of the obverse? Any irregularities in the medal would be instantly obvious in a poorly-crafted copy.
