Gensui
Why do you think that they kept them in cardbord boxes? Tell me more Transportation reasons?
JapanX
Transportation reasons? Gotcha! A flurry of speculation ...
Gensui
Well, I confess myself guilty Well, sometimes I think, things are not so complicated. Why not any practical reasons? And here it comes through again - the historian: without any possibilities to prove any speculations we're doing guessing games... Highly appreciate Rich's approach to the mint Edited November 17, 2012 by Gensui
Dieter3
I have just written to the Mint in both English and Japanese concerning this matter. If we are lucky, a definitive answer will arrive someday. AMEN! ;)
fukuoka
The answer came: Dear Richard Catalano, Thank you for your inquiry. We cannot answer your question; this is because we manufacture decorations and medals based on orders from the Cabinet Office. Your understanding is appreciated. Sincerely, Tomoko Mizui Public Relations Office Japan Mint E-mail: pub@mint.go.jp

Sounds familiar .... "We cannot answer your question; this is because we manufacture decorations and medals based on orders from the Cabinet Office." Thanks Rich! Really appreciate your effort! fukuoka
Interesting use of the semi-colon. I guess that is all I can say about this email.

fukuoka
Typical Japanese phrase. It actually means 'Please do not pursue this questioning any more.'
Dieter3
Yeah, that's the same person that denied me any information as well. "Your understanding is appreciated" - Thanks Mint Bureau, but you've done nothing to contribute to understanding anything other than understanding that you are not interested in helping us! What, is this some kind of "TOP SECRET"? Sheesh. Well, I'm going to dig deeper. Could take a while and likely be a dead end, but worth trying. Rich, have you at all tried to contact the cabinet Office? Still no response to my query.
Gensui
...by the way: did anybody visited the Museum at the Mint? Are their a local (public?) archive? BR, Chris
Dieter3
I have not visited any branches of the mint, unfortunately. That's on my list for my next visit! :D
Gensui
Dieter3, Based on my experience with official authorities, support is mostly very poor. Self-investigation might be the best way to figure some questions out. Background of my question was, if somebody already visited the Mint and knows if there are any affiliate library and/or archive for public visitors. I may have the chance for a trip to Japan next year and think about to pay a visit to the Mint in Osaka. BR, Chris
JapanX
Very interesting specimen of the first, 1887 type The most interesting part is the box which is modern replacement... Nicely done and the first one that I saw... The original catching eye on the ribbon was lost too
