Looks like "Grüning" to me. What is the rest of the stamp-- "Hauptmann u. Komp. Führer........ that might help.

Can't find a Grüning to match rank, cap band color, or cockade. Looks like "Grimmig" to me, but the only one I found for that was Lt dR 1899/1900 in Inf Rgt 150, to dL 04/05 and aD 07/08 (not in '07 dR/dL directory) from LWB Bitterfeld with an LD2 1906/07... never to appear again.

I think we're reading a curved imperfect ink stamp wrong, with random spots on the leather not actually vowel dots..

Can you tell if the big dot is ink or a letaher splotch? It looks to me like "Gri" and then scribbles away through nothing up/nothing down to a g or a y or a really sloppy ch on the end. Can't find any Prussian red-band/regular cockade match.

The only Grüning with a red band was an ancient Landwehr officer (Hauptmann dR 14.11.03 L2l) originally with Inf Rgt 71, listed in 1907 as Obersteuerkontrolleur in Sangershausen. No first name, not in the Orders Almanac, not a Prussian or Reichs official.

Looks to me like one of those hopeless scribbles....
