JapanX Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 (edited) Comparison with "normal medal" Edited September 19, 2013 by JapanX
JapanX Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 What will be your diagnosis dear doctors? Cheers, Nick
JapanX Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 On the face of it indeed they look like casting ... But on the second could be original medals that for some time were exposed to some kind agressive environment and then were gilded ... What do you think about this possibility?
utopis Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 look at the medal in post #11 on the right site the border ornament has a raised line that shouldn't be there
JapanX Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 (edited) That's true, but I believe that the "normal medal" (one that is on the right) also has it (only it is on the upper part of border ornament). No? ;) Edited September 19, 2013 by JapanX
utopis Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 I'm not sure that I see it.. Could you mark the position?
utopis Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Have a look at this: 1. The leaf which decorates the suspension socket is very thick. The marked position (1) shows a corner of the leaf which exists on the right (original) but not on the left. And it looks like there was never something on the left. Because if there was something but was completely erased the whole surface must be flat. The relief should the be completely gone. 2. This line is definitely not on the right piece. One and the same die could not produce such a raised line if it wasn't altered. What would be the reason for that?
JapanX Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 (edited) Oops. Indeed this medal doesn't have this "raised line" I've posted wrong medal for comparison Sorry man, I can't right now post the correct one (I am currently on mobile - that's why most of the time my posting activity looks like a series of outbursts ) Until then please believe me that this "raised line" is "normal" feature of "normal" medals :) Edited September 19, 2013 by JapanX
utopis Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 (I am currently on mobile - that's why most of the time my posting activity looks like a series of outbursts ) Aha! I always wondered ...
JapanX Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 Yep, today I fell in a fit of posting ... Again
JapanX Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 (edited) 1. The leaf which decorates the suspension socket is very thick. Indeed, these medals looks like they were exposed to acid or something ... That's why I thought it would be fun to discuss them One and the same die could not produce such a raised line if it wasn't altered. I think there were several dies (too many medals around ) Edited September 19, 2013 by JapanX
utopis Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Acid would be the only possibility but then some of the borders seem to sharp Multiple dies is of course very plausible. Now one needs to examine the different designs to check this line beneath the neck.
JapanX Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 Now one needs to examine the different designs These will be provided until Sunday. Hopefully
