Mervyn Mitton
With a Forum the size of GMIC we tend to gather information from many sources. I prefer to write my own articles - however, I am convalescing at present and am making use of some good press articles. Ian Shepherd's ( a member) wife,Ann, often sends me a small bundle of press cuttings. This one I thought was well written and interesting. The original appeared in the Guardian newspaper and the writers' are credited in the article. There are two parts. paul wood
I remember him very well, turned up after we sold him with his First Afghan War medal. I read his poem "On Balaklava Heights" to the London Medal Club at a members own. Paul
peter monahan
Yes, thank you for sharing that. I ave a fellow on the local WWI Honour Roll I'm compiling who appears to ave taken his own life and I'm not just sure how to deal with that information when I publish the roll. Always a touchy subject but, with our modern understanding of the mental costs of war, I think handled more compassionately now than in the past. Mervyn Mitton
I would describe him as ' Died on Service'. I fully agree with you that a little compassion is called for - how awful that the description should be on the roll for years to come. If he did commit suicide - what dreadful events led-up to that happening ? Best forgotten. Mervyn
peter monahan
Mervyn That's what I've been thinking. Or simply 'Died - 1922'. two other names on the roll are of men who were invalided home and died here, one on November 23, 1918. So he'll be in company!
