joe campbell Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 i picled this up at the SOS.it is an unmarked 1914 EK 1, made of no-silvermaterials, and with a hinge reminiscent of someof the '39 schinkels.i would guesstimate that it is post WW1 production, but invite your comments.thanks, joe
Daniel Murphy Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 Joe, Nice one. I have one of these with a copper plated magnetic core that was thenn painted black. I think that they could be late war and made into the 30's, but who knows. Frankly I consider this a basic collection variation, but yours is in super nice shape. It would nice if someday, someone found a marked one so we would know who made the things though.Dan Murphy
Tony Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 (edited) Joe,Here are two of mine. The flat copper cross has what I would call a standard type pin, so I'd guess at it being late war, maybe late 20s even whereas the convex brass (?) cross has a similar type of pin to your one. I'd agree with Dan that these were being produced into the 30s.Tony Edited March 4, 2006 by Tony
joe campbell Posted March 4, 2006 Author Posted March 4, 2006 thanks for the feedback!tony, your hinge and reverse materials, aswell as the shape of the cross on the rightsure are close!joe
Mike K Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 (edited) Hi,Joe, nice looking example but double check and make sure the core has not been repainted. The frames look worn but the black paint looks 100% - it's a bit unusual. There are several variations of this type of cross. Almost all are vaulted though. The only markings I've seen are for silver (hard to find those ones!). Cores can be steel or non-ferrous. Frames can be silver, nickel-silver or silver-plated tombak. The catches can be "square"-wire or roundwire. Your example has a slightly different pin shape to Tony's example (which imo is the "classic" shape for this type of hinge).RegardsMike Edited March 6, 2006 by Mike K
joe campbell Posted March 6, 2006 Author Posted March 6, 2006 mike-always interesting info!in looking at the several crosses above, all have some wear at the outer points ofeach arm. tony's two have wear to thecrown. mine doesn't, but probably wouldwith a bit more wear by the recipient.i've gone back and looked at it anddon't think it's a repaint. i think it's beenwell cared for and i was lucky enoughto find it after relatively little use.joe
