paul kennedy
I think I found his gazette for 2nd Lieutenant in the Scottish Rifles. It looks like he was in the 1/5 Seaforth Highlanders, then became an officer. If I'm reading the MIC correctly, his War Medal and Victory medal will be named as an officer (Scottish Rifles). I just purchased his 1914-15 Star, which is named as a private in the Seaforth Highlanders. I wonder where the King's African Rifles fits into the puzzle? data.pdf Edited June 20, 2014 by paul kennedy
peter monahan
I'm obviously missing something, as I don't see any reference to the KAR.

paul kennedy
I'm also wondering about the comment "On R&F roll POW. V.M.". Edited June 23, 2014 by paul kennedy
Tony
According to H. Williamson R & F Roll is Rank and File Roll - a roll of men commissioned from the ranks.
paul kennedy
Thanks Tony. I was really curious about the POW part. Could it be Prisoner of war, or am I reaching?

Tony
I don't understand the POW bit because it's POW VM and I've only ever seen P of W or POW written on a medal card. I'd be asking someone who can get to Kew to look up his service record for me and eagerly awaiting the Red Cross to release their records. paul kennedy
I'm guessing the V.M. is for victory medal, and the POW. is for something related to it. However, it would be neat if it did end up pertaining to "prisoner of war".
paul kennedy
I just figured out after blowing up the picture, that is says "B.W. V.M." instead of POW.
