Tony Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 After recently buying some photo postcards and deciphering the squiggly lines on the back it appears I have a photo of a pre war Saxon regular so, I checked the German casualty lists online (the surname Schmidt didn't put me off) and think I may have found him here near the top left http://des.genealogy.net/search/show/1250929 Gren. Hugo Schmidt. The problem I'm having is that I can't turn the page to check I have the correct unit (Gren. Regt. 101). Does anyone know how to turn the pages on the Verlustlisten site? Tony
Söderbaum Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 You can log in to the site, then you can turn the pages back and forwards. Gunnar
GRA Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Hello Tony! Is this the page you wanted? http://files.genealogy.net/verlustlisten/04220.jpeg Just change the page number (in this case from .../04221 to .../04220) after enlarging the picture, no log-on required! /Jonas
Tony Posted November 5, 2014 Author Posted November 5, 2014 (edited) Thank you Gunnar and Jonas for the prompt replies. Jonas, I don't get the page number when I search, this is what I get for page 4221 http://des.genealogy.net/search/show/1250929. Thanks for the link though, unfortunately the previous page shows Gren. Regt.100 as the unit. And so my search goes on, I'll try logging on. Tony Edited November 5, 2014 by Tony
Dave Danner Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 This is one of the annoyances with these Verlustlisten, along with the failure to include the ranks, but it's hard to complain when what they have provided is so great a resource. Not being a registered user who can log in like Gunnar, I have to go to "View source" and get the address of the page, as Jonas did, and then change the number.
The Prussian Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 (edited) Hello! I don´t understand... My link above says another number. In this case 1250929 How can I change the page number 4221? I can´t find a "view source", and I can´t enlarge the picture. Edited November 6, 2014 by The Prussian
Tony Posted November 6, 2014 Author Posted November 6, 2014 Hello! I don´t understand... My link above says another number. In this case 1250929 How can I change the page number 4221? I can´t find a "view source", and I can´t enlarge the picture. Thanks for all the replies! Jens, I get exactly the same as Andy shows above, no sign of the number 4221 that can be changed. I've applied to be a registered user so hopefully that'll solve my problem. Dave, I hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip, Tony
Dave Danner Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 To get to the source code, you place the cursor somewhere on the page and right click on your mouse. It is "view page source" in Chrome and Firefox, or "view source" in IE. The address for the entire page is your 1250929. The address for just the image is a little ways down in the code: <div class="body"> <a href="http://files.genealogy.net/verlustlisten/04221.jpeg" rel="drag-mode:true; zoom-width: 600; zoom-height: 200; x: 60; y: 115" class="MagicZoom"> <img src="/page/thumbnailImage/4221?width=400&fitToWidth=true" width="400" height="567.1957670344"/> </a> It is '> The format is - files.genealogy.net/verlustlisten/xxxxx.jpeg - where "xxxxx" is the original page number of the Verlustliste, preceded by zeroes if necessary to make it five digits. Sometimes it is "jpg" rather than "jpeg". Here is the first page of the first list, for example: '> Tony, The rest of the trip was good, up until I broke my arm on the side of a mountain in the Harz. Put into a cast in the hospital in Quedlinburg, and then a new cast when I got to the Veterans' Hospital in Washington DC. So my last week wasn't very productive, and typing and writing are still pretty painful. Dave
The Prussian Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 (edited) Hello Dave! Call me stupid, call me dumb... but I opened the sources and found that: "'>" So far, so nice. But if I change the 04221 into 04220 or 04222 (by using jpeg or jpg), nothing happens... "This page can not be found" Edited November 7, 2014 by The Prussian
Tony Posted November 7, 2014 Author Posted November 7, 2014 Dave, Thanks for the step by step explanation, it worked. I feel for you with the arm, mine isn't much better although it wasn't broken, but it's getting there. At least you didn't break it at the beginning of your trip. Andy, scroll down below the the copy of the actual Verlustlisten page and you'll see a box with the page details, right click and a new window opens, click on 'view page source or 'view source' depending on your browser, another window opens showing lots of IT stuff. Scroll down till you see <div class="body"> Below that you'll see a link showing the page number in the address I copied that link and pasted it into the address bar, changed the number to 04220 and pressed enter and page 4220 appeared in a size everyone can read. Tony
The Prussian Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 (edited) Hi Tony! I'll try it when I'm home. One needs a doctor title to do that. .. Edited November 7, 2014 by The Prussian
Tony Posted November 7, 2014 Author Posted November 7, 2014 Hi Tony! I'll try it when I'm home. One needs a doctor title to do that. .. yeah tell me about it.
The Prussian Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 Hi Tony! It bloody worked! I´ll create a monument to you, matey! Thanx a lot!
Tony Posted November 8, 2014 Author Posted November 8, 2014 Please send a photo of the monument when finished and put Dave's name on it too as his explanation did it for me. Dave's name can be smaller than mine if you like :)
