I thought they usually had ranks and units mentionned.If it has a chance to be an officially named medal, I would be happy to have further détails about the significance of the mention around its reverse.Thank you.VeteranP.S. Elmar Lang Posted April 1, 2015 Share Posted April 1, 2015 Hello,I can say that your Bronze "Al Valore Militare" medal, is of the official type, as awarded by the Royal Italian Air Force (they weren't struck by the Royal Mint, but by a private firm: Pagani, Milano, thus, the lack of the "crowned-Z" mark.The naming is also what I would expect to see on an officially awarded medal of this type. What is engraved around the laurel wreath, means "SKY OF THE WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN SEA - JULY 1941 - JANUARY 1942". Considering the heavy engagements of the Italian Air Force during WW2 when they had to support the expeditionnary force in Lybia and protect the country itself against Allied raids, one would expect the AVM was earned by an significant number of fliers.I am delighted and truly grateful.Veteran Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It would seem the bronze AVM I have is the second one you reported.The late silver AVM in 1946 and 1951 are rather strange considering Italy was not at war anymore. Could they have been later awards for services during WW2?I am most grateful and hope to return your favor some day.
