Mark McM Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Hi All, Am looking to conclusively identify this badge. Have heard "legion in Algeria" but just don't know for sure. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
IrishGunner Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 (edited) Not French Foreign Legion, but rather an organization formed in the 1930s to benefit veterans of France's North African colonial units - called the Comité des Amitiés Africaines. It's headquarters was in Paris, but there were chapters in several North African cities. (Google yields a lot of additional information.) Edited November 12, 2015 by IrishGunner
Mark McM Posted November 12, 2015 Author Posted November 12, 2015 Ah, that's what I call conclusive! The badge came along with an interesting Legion vet's group, but fits well within the scope of the other items! Thanks Irish...
Chris Boonzaier Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 Hi, Lets see the rest of the group!! :-)
Mark McM Posted November 14, 2015 Author Posted November 14, 2015 no problem.... some paperwork... he was in the mechanized Autonomous Group of 1er REC in North Africa, then occupation of Germany, then Vietnam. All material was obtained from his great-granddaughter. There is more material that is being gathered, hopefully the two missing medals and some diplomas will be found....
Chris Boonzaier Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 Nice! I am dead keen to see the rest!!
Mark McM Posted November 15, 2015 Author Posted November 15, 2015 will post all additional acquisitions! I was wondering what the long silver embroidered cloth bar is. Any idea?
Chris Boonzaier Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 Hi, no idea, before my time... maybe Adjudant-Chef if he was in the REC ?

Mark McM Posted November 18, 2015 Author Posted November 18, 2015 (edited) better pics of some of the docs... his wife's documents... Edited November 18, 2015 by Mark McM
Chris Boonzaier Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 A very nice set, I hope you can complete it!! I wonder what happened to him in WW2?
Mark McM Posted November 19, 2015 Author Posted November 19, 2015 good question, Chris. The Centre de documentation historique de la Légion étrangère at the Legion museum may have something on him. It's interesting that he was an Attaché to the French military government in occupied Germany. Quite a colorful guy!
